AUTONOMOUS GROUND VEHICLE CONTROL - Essay Example

Summary
Artificial Intelligence is called as such because it is used to support systems and processes when human intelligence is absent. Of the manifold applications of artificial intelligence, a very useful one is in the field of aerospace and advanced vehicles. It can also be effectively used in manufacturing, underwater and ground explorations and studying the atmosphere…

Thus, under an autonomous situation, a controller must be able to manage problems not only with the software but also fix problems arising in the hardware. He also believes that the process of developing a controller with artificial intelligence is evolutionary, ie. each model must evolve as an improvement over the previous one through continuous improvements and compilation and coordination of research results in various related fields. For the design and concept, research and concepts would be relevant from the fields of control, estimation, communication theory, computer science, identification and operations research.

Antsaklis et al have described the architecture of the controller that will be used in future advanced space vehicles. The principles and model of the controller will be such that the controller will be able to establish communication between the autonomous vehicle and the pilot or ground station.[Antsaklis, 1989-90].The controller is capable of dealing with unexpected situations, new control tasks and failures in the system. Charmak [1985] and Shapiro [1987] have discussed in detail the controllers and autonomous situations in artificial intelligence and operations research. . ave been assigned and described by Saridis [1979] and Gevarter [1984 ].

They have discussed in detail simple controllers used on linear plants to complex, enhanced adaptive controllers that can be used in sophisticated situations.AI techniques used in enhancing space station autonomy, capability and safety are discussed by Firschein [1986]. Ozguner [1989] has discussed in detail a theoretic view of decentralized control in artificial intelligence. Saridis has put forth a mathematical model for the working of artificial intelligence systems. He has also discussed in detail the functional aspects and the principle of increasing intelligence with decreasing precision.

[1985,1987].The theory of DES (discrete event management) has been put forth by Zhong & Peterson to discuss the decision making ability of artificial intelligence systems. While some of the parameters are not taken into consideration by the AI system, it uses higher intelligence to logically decide what parameter to consider and control.RamedgenWonham[Zhong,1990] and the Petrinets[Peterson,1981] are the examples of DES frameworks discussed in detail by various workers in the field. While AI is used in many fields today like data mining, logistics, medical diagnosis and other technological fields, its significance in the aerospace industry had been vastly written about.

Antsaklis et al have described how AI is vital in maneuvering new vehicles like Aeroassisted Orbital Transfer Vehicle and the aerospace planes. These vehicles would be required to fly at great heights and even higher velocities under uncertain atmospheric density and aerodynamic characteristics. Due to lack of human control in these vehicles launched in space, there is a need for setting up autonomous control systems. As such, autonomous
