Teacher Use of Statistics in Sports I would like to discuss the use of statistics in sports because this is the application of statistics that most kids my age are interested and understand and which I personally believe to be accurate because I understand the mechanics. We can pick the sport of basketball where a mere glance at the statistics will already give us an idea of how good the player is. In addition, the statistics used is very easy to understand that even an elementary student can understand.
This kind of statistic used basketball is called descriptive statistics. It is like a summary of the quantitative analysis of a data in simpler and manageable form. In this case, we will get the stats of one of my favorite players Anthony Carmelo from New York Knicks. He scores 25.7 points per game, 7.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists. This is supported by career season high or the highest score he got in these respective areas. He got a career high of 30.7, rebound high of 10.3 and an assist of 5.
2 (NBA, 2013). These numbers are what is called in statistics “averaging” or adding up all the scores and other relevant statistics and divide them by their quantity. For fans like us, it gives us a snapshot of the player’s performance from field goals, rebounds, assists. This can even further be broken down to other sub-area such as field goals, three point shots and free throws to give us detailed information on how a player performed. The statistic used in this game is founded in good math but it is not intimidating and easy to understand that makes us appreciate the game more.
