Moreover, the model accounts for a high proportion of variance in charges, R2 = .64, F(1, 287) = 513.08, p < .001. Similarly, the variable days significantly predict charges in model (b), B = 889.18, t(285) = 5.99, p < .001. Model (b) also accounts for a high proportion of variance in charges, R2 = .64, F(1, 285) = 170.48, p < .001. In this case, preference is given to model (b) since it incorporates all the primary variables.
Hospital managers bear the overall authority over the running of the hospital. However, their authority is usually curtailed when administrative duties come into play. This is due to the overpowering roles of physicians. Physicians control a significant portion of hospital costs and the length of time that a patient stays in a hospital. They also determine the drugs used in treating a patient and determine the suppliers.
Despite these crucial roles, the physicians are not employees of the hospital. At times, hospitals give individual physicians admitting privileges and periodically review their performance. However, the hospital’s influence over various expenditures remains at the minimum. On the other hand, the revenues of the hospital are largely dependent on the patient’s insurance coverage. This insurance coverage may cater for a more or less fixed amount and is classified using the diagnosis related group (DRG) system. It may also cater for a percentage of the hospital bill.
