The Passion of Boxing Hamdan AlHosani Jenna Altherr Flores English 107 - 005 Sept. 15th Boxers are very interesting people. I have always looked forward to seeing them engage in the ring. Being one of my favorite sports, I love participating in boxing events because they provide a lot of fascination. A boxing enthusiast will definitely have adrenaline flowing in their body as they cheer and jeer their favorite player. Particularly, I have come to find the boxing events very thrilling and educative, as well as eye-catching, considering the dynamism presented by every turn of events and personalities who usually attend the events. There are a lot of perspectives that one can attain and learn from during these events. First, from the boxers, I have been able to learn new boxing skills, that together with my teammates, we have been able to put into practice for the benefit of our boxing. By relating with the fans, one learns the techniques of identifying the winning teams; thus, form a formidable support and cheering team with the rest of fans. In reality, the beholding of the fans, chanting names of their best boxers, and booing the opponents is usually breath-taking and eye-catching to me considering the fact that the opposition only lasts as long as the matches last. An individual also learns about the particulars involved in setting up and holding a successful boxing event. Organizers of these boxing events, whether at district, national or regional levels, have a preference for large venues that also take on the shape of amphitheaters as this presents all those in attendance, the precise view of the fights as they progress. The interior decorations of most stadiums are pictures and names of former boxing stars; thus, creating an ambient mood for boxing in itself. Success in boxing does not come easily since the sport requires a high degree of accuracy and timeliness in order to win. I got the privilege of attending a boxing event held in a state of the art gymnasium in our neighborhood. ,,and I was introduced introducedto a group of dedicated fans and boxers. The group was very eager to have the time of their lives. All attendees formed a sporting family, united by their love for the game. The gymnasium offereds a spectacular location for the boxing event. For this particular occasion and game, especially since it was during the night, the venue was well decorated and lit with the bright luminous covering the entire box gym. The lighting was intended to enhance vision for both the boxers and the fans, while providing a reflection of the venue. Furthermore, a boxing arena must always be lit since; it provides a controlled environment so that the boxers do not injure their opponents in the matches. Personally, as a boxer and a boxing enthusiast, I would not attend a boxing event that has its arena poorly lit, as in the event of rampages, though rare, one may get hurt. In addition, the portraits on the wall said it all; they bore images of boxing veterans who marveled during their prime.. By giving them the first glance, I could not fail to recognize the faces of legendary boxers Mike Tyson and Mohammed Ali. The portraits presence of these great boxers made the place classy and worthwhile to be in. To newcomers, the gym provided a serene environment for them to enjoy the game as they appreciated the work of art. From the outlook of the features within the gym and the people that attended, one can easily tell that boxing is not a game for every other person. It is a game for the courageous, the brave, and the strong. There were diverse groups of people within the gymnasium that came for different purposes but all revolving around boxing. First, there was the group that comprised of the organizers and sponsors of the games. They were not many but their duties entailed according the dignity, recognition and security required for the success of the event.. This group of persons was always in official attire and mingled only with their kind. A glance into their faces would easily reveal the mood. This was impacted by the uncertainty involved in their bets against the boxers of their choosing and those they deemed favorite to win. The second group was the boxers/players. They were the cause for my presence in the gymnasium. They were easily identified by their boxing wear such as gloves and shorts and in some cases, being bare-chested. The third group was composed of the match officials, who in most occasions are adorned in the same look and attire. They were responsible for the managing and officiateding the matches from the start to conclusion. They monitored the movements of the boxers, and declared the winners. The final group was the fans, which was the largest in number. While there was no formal attire for the fans, the most outstanding identity for all fans was the placards and banners that bore the names of the boxers that they supported. In essence, the majority of the people in a boxing arena are the boxing enthusiasts, like me. The fans cheered and jeered their favorite boxers. This served to motivate the boxers who got into action to please the audience.. In a show of solidarity with their favorite boxers, some of the fans put on t- shirts and raised banners with inscriptions of their names at the back and front.. Once the bell rang, the action started, it was a spectacular moment for the boxers to show their prowess and tactics. Apart from the fans, the coaches, boxers, and organizers were all playing their respective roles in the ring. In this particular boxing event, the organizers wore t-shirts that made them identifiable; they were written ‘AD Boxing Event’, where AD stood for Abu Dhabi, the capital city of UAE. The organizers took a very different approach to this event. While the fans were busy cheering their favorite boxers, the organizers took little attention of the game. Their role was to ensure that every activity went as planned. The coaches emerged as the most significant group of people, given their part in such games. Besides being very excited and always looking forward to their boxers winning, the coaches supported and encouraged their players to stand up when hit and fight back harder. Subsequently, the coaches were keen to assess the tactical directions of the fights andfights and inform their boxers of the winning strategies that would apply against their opponents.theeh restlessness in the coaches was evident as they focused on their boxers winning.. They were heard shouting at the boxers. They were either instructing them or congratulating them for moves well executed. When I looked at the coaches, they inspired me to engage in the sport, I felt that I was not there only to have fun but to learn and begin my boxing life. I loved the great joy, the enthusiasm, and the passion of the game, as portrayed by the coaches. I felt that my deep desire for the game had been awakened I felt like throwing myself in the ring and engaging in a real fight. There was a sense of liveliness created in the gym as every individual attempted to play their designated role well. When the time came for the time-outs, it was a refreshing time. I encountered a coach engaging his boxer in a charged conversation, talking straight to his face, “my friend you need to anticipate his throws, especially his uppercut jabs. He seems to be taking advantage of you.” In acknowledgment to his insights, the boxer nodded and took a sip of cold water to cool his heated body. The fans boosted his morale by mentioning his name continuously, “Go! Go! Go!” they were heard shouting. The morale was boosted and the boxer entered the ring feeling reenergized and passionate about winning. Back in the ring, the boxer unleashed all the andskills and implemented what he had been advised. His aim was to reward the fans and coach for their unrelenting support. The experience was spectacular. I has a close experience of the game and all that is involved . Most importantly, the passion for the game continued to grow in me. A deep feeling that boxing was my sport and I would not relent playing was strong in me. After the game, there was total jubilation by the fans of the winning team as the rest walked out disappointed. The boxers greeted one another as a show of unity. The winning boxer took time to celebrate with the fans, greeting them and accepting their applauds. In conclusion, boxing is a spectacular game that I have come to adore. It gives an opportunity for the boxers, fans, organizers and coaches to take up their roles in ensuring there is an achievement of objectives. Every individual prides in his or her role irrespective of the outcome. It is apparent that at the end of the game, there ought to be a winner and a loser, therefore, the players are required to be friendly after the game. I loved the location, the gym acted as the perfect location for the game, the decorations, and the setting made it ideal. The people make the game what it is.Nobody can be ignored as they all play very significant roles. Boxing is more than a game; it provides an opportunity for integration, participation, and engagement. I look forward to growing my passion in the game. I might have stopped considering boxing as a career, but it will always be the game that lives in my heart. I box in a boxing club in Tucson where I relieve myself from the frustrations in my life. I discern that one day I will be boxing but it is certainly not within this decade. Work Cited Ryan, Joe. Heavyweight Boxing in the 1970s: The Great Fighters and Rivalries.
