Abstract
In an organization like the military, I have come across so many different personalities, which I found to be very resourceful to the U.S military today. Personality is well-defined as "the combination of Characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character." After taking the Human Metrics typology test, I have a better understanding that each person has their personality traits. My result states that I am an INTJ, which I will explain what each letter means and how it related or affect my day to day life.
Introduction
The personal distinction in conduct, emotions, and thoughts are essential in establishing one's personality. Specific variables are distinctively used as units of measurements to classify and define personality differences across individuals. The personality characteristics are intertwined with the working environments in an unavoidably challenging manner. C.G Jung (2016) contemplated it was tremendously hard for people to form a distinct entity in an organization. Jung's typology on personality types includes a general umbrella for mensuration and interpretation of personality. Isabel Myers innovated a four scale instrument Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), out of Jung's idea and notably David Keirsey's four temperamental. Introversion and extroversion were first identified as ways of different persons route energy (Jung, 2016). Perception (regarded information by people) had two inverses; intuition and sensation. Judgment (verdict people desire to make) had two contraries; feeling and thinking. The distinct personality attributes shape how individuals wish to lead their outer lives and how they interact with the environment.
My Personality Type as an INTJ
After Taking the Jung Typology Test, my resulted score letters are INTJ. The letter "I" stands for introvert, the "N" stands for Intuitive, the "T" stands for Thinking, and the "J" stands for Judging. According to the Jungle test, "INTJs may appear to project an aura of "definiteness," of self-confidence. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by the less decisive, is actually an extreme specific rather than a general nature; its source lies in the specialized knowledge systems that most people of this type start building at an early age." (Jung Typology Test, 2015). There are sixteen different types of personality traits, and an INTJ is known to be the mastermind. We are known to deal with thing rational. INTJs personality trait tends to have a strategic plan before they can execute any decision they have to make. They try to find knowledgeable, intelligent, and competent people within a circle or organization.
INTROVERT (41%)
The Jung Typology test confirms that I am an introvert. Which I was not surprised about since I have been told before by others. Keirsey gives us a good break down of what kind of people are introverted. Introverts are known to be "quiet, reserve, thoughtful individual. They don't seek out special attention or social engagements, as these events can leave introverts feeling exhausted and drained." (Jung Typology Test, 2020) Being a firefighter in the United States, The Navy requires us to train and perform drills with the ship crew on firefighting. This part of my job I find it very demanding and draining because it is out of my norm, making me feel uncomfortable.
INTUITIVE (12%)
Intuitive is also known as intuition. Intuitive is define as "a person believes mainly information he or she receives from the internal or imaginative world" (Kroeger, Thuesen, & Rutledge, (2017). According to The Jung Typology test result, it shows that I score higher in intuitive that my sensing, which means that I focus more on internal material over external evidence. Being in the military, you required to be organized and deal-oriented; when one mistake can cause someone to live, the disposition is vital. To be a firefighter in the Navy, you have to be very organized and follow procedures and compliance, which I love about my job.
THINKING (1%)
The third segment of the Typology test is the thinker. Thinkers are people that gather data before they make any logical decision. Even though I did not score high in this segment, any decision that I make, I tend to outweigh the pros and cons so I can make a logical decision. "Thinking personality trait place on relationships, they can still dismiss emotional responses, either their own or others. This is often because of their discomfort with emotions, which don't always follow the rational path they value. Sometimes, emotions puzzle them. But that doesn't mean they have hearts of stone" (Jung Typology Test, 2020). Being in a leadership position in the military, most leaders tend to lean more on the feeler side than the thinker side, which I find very biased when evaluating sailors' careers.
JUDGING (25%)
Judging and perceiving is the last category of this segment. Juger can easily be mistakenly for the word judgmental. After I received my Typology test score, I thought I was 25 percent critical, which was not the case. Keirsey defines judger are people who "Present a timetable and stick to it, show your achievements and results, document those areas that require more work or discussion and Acknowledge the need for closure and short time schedule." (Personalitypage.com, 2015). As for me, I like to set realistic goals, create a plan, and try to accomplish them every day or promptly. I also want to have a self of control of any decision that I am planning or making. Last-minute planning I do not like, which in the military I encountered a lot, which I find to be very frustrating and irritating when that happens.
The Jung Typology Test and the four-letter and what each one of them means
The four-letter types and their meanings, along with the NF temperament, define my temperament quite well. As an INFJ, I desire to think through issues, trust my ego, care for others, and have a reliable, ethical value system. I am tremendously understanding and see things that are not apparent to others. The ability to see patterns and meanings in the world can help me in many different ways (personalitypage.com, 2014). Trusting my intuition and having a caring nature leveled out by my ability to stay focused and organized puts me at a definite advantage in many situations. With an NF temperament, harmony, connection, and inclusion are essential to me.
David Keirsey's Temperament; The idealist
According to Keirsey's four temperamental groupings, I fall into the idealist group. The correlation between Myers and Briggs and Keirsey's corresponds to descriptor letters, NF. The main attributes that I derived from the idealist are that I a mostly concerned with my growth and realizing unique distinctiveness. Due to introversion, I tend to pursue self-growth and attain ultimate potential. I create a sense of unity and cooperation in the Navy firefighting team. For instance, I occasionally champion in leading the firefighting team in drills and training. As a leader, the quietness has opened up opportunities to represent my firefighting unit in the U.S Navy seminars. I am inspired to be a great leader and champion of the Navy firefighting team to create positivism and growth.
Type Talk at Work
Organizational Behavior Overall
Personality typing can play a significant role in the organization today if they incorporate it into their organization. This will cause organizations to look at the big picture and analyze what vital to them. I firmly believe that personality typing aids can assist in business to run effectively. It also creates diversity, which helps companies to improve growth in their businesses. Therefore, it useful to look at big picture thinking. What is Big picture thinking? It is defined as "organizational self-awareness, where employees understand the organization-wide goals, constraints, and strategies and where employees furthermore see how their job and their department fits into all of that" (Fisher Lesson 1: Worldview Perspective, 2015, Note).
People of my personality type are idealists, with a limitless capacity and talent for refining upon whatever takes their attention. As rational thinkers and problem solvers, they tactically examine life behind what they see on their thought. One thing that prevents INTJs from being slowed down in the quest for perfection is the practicality they embrace. INTJs relate the principle "Does it work?" to everything from their research efforts. They carefully scrutinize information before presenting a carefully complicated answer. INTJs have a preference for intellectually stimulating people. As a result, they tend to be discriminating in their relationships and are naturally autonomous.
As a military leader, I have a better understanding of my strength and weakness and why I react the way I do to a particular situation. Being introverted, most focus is on working individually rather than on teams. Working alone enabled recognition of my niche in the workforce. To achieve autonomy, working alone shapes the organization's identity and negotiating individual identity (Zanin, & Bisel, 2018). The power of quietness enhanced the achievement of leadership in the Navy, and this has seen tremendous growth in the team. As a leader, introversion befitted to good listening to my teammate's ideas and involving them in decision-making. This has improved a sense of value to the entire team and organization.
The effectiveness of the Navy firefighting team depends on a highly collaborative effort between individuals. Embracing a proper working environment is the basis for increased efficiency in communication and team organization (Real, Bardach, & Bardach, 2017). My introversion preference is to work in a segregated office without distractions—the ability to think and analyze when alone is high critically. In an open office, I find myself occasionally distracted, which leads to my analytical Thinking. The firefighting teammates vary in communication, with a blend of extroverts and introverts. My significant strength in touch as a team leader while in the field mostly is displaying cues that give individual dominance and self-confidence. Maintaining direct eye contact, substantial expansile postures, and assertiveness cues significantly achieve influence over teammates, therefore, managing tasks efficiently.
From a broader perspective, I am a better employee and manager because I understand my distinct personality type and its strengths and weaknesses. Within the organization, individual leadership thrives well in merging extroverts and introverts. Understanding that the entire Navy Firefighting team has a similar expectation, the key belief is to manage yourself first to effectively manage others (Kroeger, Thuesen & Rutledge, 2002, p.14). INFJ's are inspired to be great leaders and embrace positive changes in the organization of teams and the organization (Kroeger, Thuesen & Rutledge, 2002, p. 318). Being introduced to type watching has opened a new world for me, and I feel it will be very beneficial towards my future endeavors.
