Effects of Domestic Violence against Women Effects of Domestic Violence against Women Several decades ago, in most societies around the world, it was culturally acceptable for a husband to beat up his wife. Wife battering was a tradition that a given culture would identify itself with. The gender roles assigned to the girl child were restrictively limited. Besides being given duties and chores that circumscribed around the house, women were expected to be submissive beings and should wait for commands from their husband; masters whose words were final.
However, over the years, the wave of enlightenment and rise of feminism created a new social outlook into this critical matter. Women have since risen to oppose the many violations and cases of abuse committed against them (Loxton, 2006, p. 718). Nonetheless, in this modern era, statistical reports about domestic abuse against women especially in the developing countries continue to appall. There are shreds of evidence showing women are still experiencing domestic violence. The physical, emotional and social problems that such women face are far-reaching.
As of the report by World Health Organization (WHO), an estimation of over 30% of women globally has been abused in one way or the other. More than a third of murders of women result from domestic violence. These statistics show how much severe the impacts of domestic violence against women can extend (Hester, 2012, p. 1069). Women are more likely to be abused (in most cases) due to their inability to defend themselves. Domestic Violence against women has profound adverse effects on their socio-emotional and physical wellbeing.
