The Civil Rights Movement - Essay Example

The greatest effect of this movement is that it achieved its objective of granting the black people equal rights with the whites. In 1964, President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Bill that gave the black people equal rights with the whites. This bill was created by John Kennedy who had led the country before Johnson. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963 when he tried to pass this bill (Zeiger 64). In 1965, this movement also achieved equal voting rights for all Americans (Zeiger 68). This is because the Civil Rights Bill had not included the voting rights of the black people when it granted them other rights.

The greatest effect of the civil rights movement today is the fact that black people can become leaders in the United States (Zeiger 72). The country is currently led by Barrack Obama who is a black person; this would not occur if it were not for the civil rights movement. .
