Research has uncovered that celebrity stalkers might not be dangerous but change in due course as the sense of obsession grows. For instance, John Hinckley was obsessed with the actress Jodie Foster (Buzz Feed, 2013). An obsession that made him stalk her on several occasions and when he saw his attempts were futile, he attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan in 1981, thinking that this act would impress Jodie Foster. In another instance, John Lennon ended up being murdered by his celebrity stalker David Chapman (Buzz Feed).
The celebrity stalkers usually create their own reality where they see themselves in contact with these celebrities, and when they are rejected they tend to turn violent leading thus pose a threat to the celebrities who they stalk. For instance, “Steven Swanson, obsessed with model Miranda Kerr, made plans to travel across the U.S to kill Kerr claiming that she was his wife”. Dawnette Knight, obsessed with actor Michael Douglas sent threats to his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, threatening to “slice her up like meat on a bone” (Buzz Feed, 2013). Some of these stalkers would take extreme extents such as trespassing the celebrities’ homes as well as work premises. For instance, “Robert Melanson, a stalker obsessed with Rihanna was found on her rooftop”. In the same case, Dante Michael Soiu who was a stalker to actress Gwyneth Paltrow was convicted of trespassing to her parent’s home.
