Farmers spend most of their time with farmers. Their interests, needs, and criteria for success are alike. The same holds true for all sorts of professions. Hunting and gathering not only played a role in the evolution of human identity as food collectors but also helped assign specific roles to men and women. The task of hunting is more consistent with the skills of men while gathering is easy enough for women to do. Horticultural people managed to have more stable identities as the need to constantly move and relocate in order to collect food was obviated with the introduction of plowing crops.
