Where there are ethnic, religious, economic, and cultural disparities in society, ensuring the protection of democratic principles would call for the media to protect some important elements including making provisions for varying opinions and ideas. This process would allow for the protection of elements that would include the reader as well as ensure the accurate portrayal of the differences of the audience. Such a process also supports the establishment of open politics, one which supports the different individuals and groups involved.

Ensuring participation has been a major issue for the democratic setting. Such participation has also become a priority for all communities in the hope of ensuring a more representative and diverse social structure. In effect, the alternative media is a crucial factor in protecting and providing a say to the migrants, in this case, the Muslim migrants. In securing actual and social data, the alternative media allows for immigrants to participate in the social scene, allowing for democratic elements to emerge and manifest.

Still, the dominant media is not a sufficient tool for the fair representation of immigrants. Immigrants are still often shown in a negative light, mostly as sources of social and political issues (Poole, 2001). Studies on immigrants in Europe indicate how these immigrants often feel unfairly treated and represented in the media (Poole, 2001). The increase in the number of ethnic migrants on the global scene indicates a major cry by migrants to be represented in an alternative and accurate way.

It is very much apparent that the mainstream media is seeking to accurately or fairly portray these ethnic minorities (Cottle, 2000). The tendency of the media towards sensationalism is also not helping matters especially as these types of broadcasts are usually being utilized in order to gain more revenue and increased viewership.  In effect, discussions on the possible negative impact of the migrant media in relation to European values have become very much common in the current European media reports (Georgiou, 2005).
