The battle showed the viewer that the character of Slim (Lopez) is not a total pushover after all and that in a battle of wills, a woman can actually over power a man and succeed at it. Using her inner strength and images from her past, she soldiered on and defeated the man who caused her the most pain and grief in life. All while reminding him of how much she was afraid of him. Was being the operative word since she was prepared to die in that very house in order to protect her child and regain her honor as a woman. Granted that she did it through unorthodox means, I feel that she was left without other recourse since the man she was up against was powerful and a dirty fighter who tried to block off all avenues of possible escape for her. In a way, this film can truly be seen as a female empowerment film and an open suggestion that women in battered relationship need not stay in it. They have the right to defend themselves and their loved ones at any cost.
Our readings in class have always connected the rights of women to the sense of empowerment that the female gender gets from these liberties. It has always reminded women of their equal place in society and the fact that female empowerment comes as a cost and must always be fought for in order to push the cause forward.
