In a twisted story about racial discrimination and the fight to maintain supremacy by the Klu Klux Klan, an organization known for its indifference and hatred towards not only colored people but also ones who do not fit under their area of interest, the FBI agents have to gather clues and witnesses to work on the murder case for which they have been assigned to solve. In 1964, as shown in Mississippi Burning, the Klu Klux Klan was active in acts of arson committed against the "colored" division of society.

The knights vandalized the members of the town driving past their houses and shooting at their windows, leaving being the burning cross as a representation to denote their presence. Clan members entered the homes of African peasants, physically assaulted them burned down their houses. The knights of the Klu Klux Klan in Mississippi did have a stronghold in the town, influencing the minds of local white residents to live with and accept the cultural divide and stood up against people and organizations that opposed their view.

The residents of the town witnessed regular acts of vandalizm by the mebers of the Clan. The residents were so afraid, that despite being inflicted with injuries, refused to register complaints with the police officials quoting "leave them alone, and maybe they will leave us alone".

The "Negros" as the Africans were referred to by the members of the clan, were caught off guard after their service at the church and were beaten up and left to die because the Klu Klux Klan did not patronize people outside their community. Ones who did stand up for their rights were hanged in front of their burning houses serving as a warning to living members of their family and others who were likely stand up against the atrocities committed by the clan members. Role of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the movie.

The agents were sent to pursue the murder investigation of the missing human rights activists. Amidst local unrest and turmoil, they meticulously carried on their investigation in co-ordination with the local Sheriff's department, constantly maintaining vigil on the suspects and effectively handling stress caused due to local prevailing conditions. The FBI agents manage to gather witnesses and bring the assailants to court thus upholding justice as depicted in Mississippi Burning. A few instances to support the above statement: Maintaining stakeouts and cleverly bringing all the suspects under one roof and tapping their
