In this case, the system is omnipresent and a supreme elder brother. Winston is a low-ranking member of a ruling party in Oceania. Winston is watched wherever he goes through telescreens. Winston sees the face of the Party leader wherever he goes. The Party is responsible for controlling people’s language and history. The Party also implements a language whose goal is to prevent political rebellion. People are not allowed to think rebellious thoughts. Winston is frustrated by the fact that the Party limits free thoughts and any expression of individuality.
Since Winston does not like the Party, he purchases a diary illegally where he writes his criminal thoughts (Askeda, 1). However, Winston believes that there is another way in which he can live his life. In this case, Winston believes that he can change history by changing newspaper articles so that they can match with the truth that the Party decides. The slogan of the party stipulates that one who controls the past can also be able to control the future. Though the Party gives Winston his job, he sees a totally different picture.
As a result, Winston sets out to expose the Party’s fraudulent activities. He is backed up by a young woman Julia who is also frustrated by the activities that her rulers engage in (Book Rags Inc). The book comprises of many themes, words and characters who demonstrate everyday occurrences as they are depicted today. Winston believed that being the minority does not mean that a person is wrong. Smith lives in a different world from his forefathers lived. Events such as atomic wars take place, but Winston is filled with doubts whereby he starts seeing as if the events did not take place.
