COMMENT: This recruitment page contains information about subscribing to the BBC's weekly staff newspaper "Ariel"." These companies fall under BBC group of companies. ii)Some indication of the strategies followed by the units grouped under business services: The two companies that are very popular are: BBC World. " In this slow moving global market, BBC Worldwide has, again, increased its sales for another record year. BBC sales increase by 14% this year and will continue to increase each year. Profits rose to 170% or at 23m and cash flow reached a record 96 million pounds and it will continue to double next year's cash flow contribution. A winning strategy BBC Worldwide, many years ago,"BBC Worldwide, several years ago, put in place a marketing-led, multimedia, multi-territory strategy designed to exploit effectively brands and properties on a global, multi-format basis. The success of this strategy is being shown by the consistent growth that BBC Worldwide is now achieving, Meeting challenging targets BBC Worldwide has very challenging long-term growth targets. The most recent year shows that it is on track to meet these. Performance against competitors On a host of measures BBC Worldwide can show how it is outperforming its competitors. The British Television Distributors' Association (BTDA) figures for the TV export market in 2000 show that BBC Worldwide has, for the second year running, outstripped the UK competition by a considerable margin. COMMENT: This shows how BBC's marketing strategy paid off after many years of quality service. (http://www.bbcworldwide.com/aboutus/corpinfo/annualreps/review2001/ceo_statement.html) 2) BBC Broadcast coming to America states that "Known worldwide for its award-winning designs and creative and promotional excellence, BBC Broadcast, Ltd., will open offices in New York, making its capabilities and expertise available to the U.S. marketplace for the first time. Primarily targeting broadcast and cable networks, this move marks the next step for BBC's new commercial media services business' aggressive U.S. expansion strategy. BBC Broadcast has also initiated a search for a New York-based executive producer to handle industry outreach, business development and client services in the U.S. and will make the appointment announcement shortly. Over the last five years, BBC Broadcast has won over 100 PROMAX & BDA awards for its creative design and strategy throughout Europe. Our offering of high caliber award-winning work, talent and global entertainment perspective has not been available in the U.S. until now," explains Andy Bryant, BBC Broadcast's Director of Creative Services, who oversees the creative services group from London. "We see a tremendous opportunity in the U.S. marketplace as the market continues to grow and the desire for a unique perspective is in demand. With an expert team of creative service professionals on-staff in London, supported by the efforts of our soon-to-be-named US executive, we are now able to offer that same level of quality marketing and design solutions to networks here in America. Working as a commercial entity, BBC Broadcast delivers incredibly effective concepts and designs at a very competitive rate." BBC has opened offices in New York City." COMMENT: BBC has expanded to the United States to increase its sales. This is to increase the market share of BBC is big. (http://www.redbeemedia.com/press/archive/broadcastcoming2america.shtml) TO THE ASSIGNMENT IS Q3, so those activities that allow you to say more about the complex interrelationships of business practices and charter status would be the most interesting). The charter tells us that they must emphasized that the debate around renewing the BBC's Charter also meant that the BBC had to act now to seize the argument, answer its critics and show how it could release resources to invest in ambitions outlined in its Charter Review manifesto Building Public Value and the developing programme strategy. "My vision for the future of the BBC has three parts: a bold new programme and content strategy based above all around the idea of excellence; a transformation of the BBC into a state-of-the art digital broadcaster; and an irreversible shift in the culture of the BBC towards simplicity, opportunity and creativity. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2004/12_december/07/plans.shtml) COMMENT: The business strategies to increase sales means strategy here is not contradicting the charter of BBC. Q2: Pick ideally two models and describe them in some detail. The two preferred models are: PORTER 5P'S AND THE RATIONAL MODEL. The two best models due its popularity and clarity of results are: PORTER'S 5 P's Reflecting the emphasis upon 'industry' and 'market' outlined above, there are two dimensions to Porter's analytical framework. The vertical dimension connects raw materials to consumers, or suppliers to buyers, whilst the horizontal dimension reflects competing ways in which this connection can be made. The essence of Porter's advice for both narrowly and broadly competing enterprises and for both cost leaders and differentiators is buy low, sell high. Porter's writing creates the illusion that the generic strategies are derived from the much more impressive industry analysis that precedes them in his classic text, but the effect is achieved by adjacency rather than logical implication Porter suggests that an enterprise in a strong bargaining position can negotiate low prices from its suppliers, thus reducing the enterprise's costs. Porter's industry analysis is derived from the (deeply questionable) laws of neoclassical economics concerning the relationship between price and competition whilst Porter's generic strategies are merely the obvious result of considering the possibilities for enhancing profit from attention to either the cost or the price aspect of the equation: profit = price - cost. The only thing that relates the neoclassical economics of price and competition and the profit, price, cost equation is the inclusion of both in a best-selling text and the subsequent attribution of Porter's name to the prescriptive notions that are separately derived from them. COMMENT: It is true that low prices will increase customers and profits. Porter states that when companies agree on a high price, a new competitor to the market can easily enter by offering an introductory low price. The prices offered by BBC are reasonably priced because of its world prestige of being an excellent product and after sales service provider. RATIONAL DECISION MODEL: Under the rational model of decision making, the assumption is made that participants have agreed in advance that making a decision is the right process to follow and that the rules and language of decision making are understood by all. The rational model aims at making optimal decisions on the basis of a careful evaluation of alternative courses of action. Depending on the complexity of the problem, computational or quantitative techniques may be used to assist this process. The model is claimed to be the basis of much decision making in private and commercial life and is effective under the conditions it assumes: a finite choice situation, relevant and unproblematic data, and clear and uncontroversial choice criteria. The model views the decision-making process as a sequential series of activities leading from an initial recognition of a problem, through the delineation and evaluation of alternative courses of action, and the selection of the preferred alternative, to the implementation of action COMMENT: Making optimal decision based on the little data gathered is a necessity due to our fast paced world. Q3: Look at what you have done already and try to make sense of it in the lightof the bbc's charter, so see: What is it that is odd about the BBC as a whole How does this relate to the Business Services division BBC has offered excellent service it all its subsidiaries' customer around the globe. It has gained ground and bigger market shares around the world due to its intensive investment and advertising programs. In what ways might this mean that models of strategy have to be applied somewhat differently or in a more limited fashion than they might be to a more standard private equity business Since BBC is already well established and that the strategies of Porter's five pees and the rational model is applied here, only a small amount of strategical effort is needed to hold on to or increase its product market share.
