As a case study for this research the author will be using Technip Offshore UK Ltd. This company is the UK subsidiary of the Technip Group based in France. Because of the unique industry the company works in it has a growing need for specialist staff. According to their director of human resources, Anne Decressac (2006), the current retention level of this organisation is 9 years. The hypothesis that I am seeking to address with this research is to ascertain whether improvements in the human resource supply chain can have a significant impact on the shortages of specialist staff in offshore industries.
Following an introduction and background to the subjects being researched, the third chapter will provide a literature review of researches undertaken in the field of recruitment, retention and succession, together with articles and comments regarding these subjects. Chapter five will outline the research methodology in depth and the results based upon this will be analysed and discussed in chapter six, before making recommendations and concluding the work in chapter 7. The research methods used for this study will be based upon surveys and two questionnaires, one for management and one for employees, the details of which are outlined later.
The main survey we intend to use will be that compiled by Goffee and Jones (2003). This will determine how the issues being discussed are addressed within the various existing offshore cultures. Furthermore, we will look for comparison data from competitor organisations within the industry.Time scheduleIt is anticipated that the time scale for the completion of this dissertation would take around three months, dependent upon any limitations that might attract to the carrying out of the survey of employees.
However, it is envisaged that the various activities will be completed in the following periods.Month 1 Introduction and completion of background research. Research information for literature review.Month 2 Conduct Survey Correlate information from other surveys and researchesMonth 3 Analysis of results from surveys and research. Completion, proofreading and revision of dissertation. Literature SourcesThere will be a number of literature avenues used to enable our research into the subject matter of this dissertation.
To form a foundation, research into organisational culture will be studied. This will include resources such as Cooper et. al. International Handbook (2001), Shakelman (2000), Edgar Shein (1999), D.F. Abdell (1999) and Peter Engholm (1999). Other applicable Internet, journals and publications will also be utilized in the development of the research. For recruitment issues a number of human resources will be studied, including Michael Armstrong (2006). To provide a better understanding of the shaping of organisation structures for retention purposes as a theoretical subject, it is intended to concentrate on works of researchers such as Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones (2003) and Kevin Dooley, Andrew Van de Ven (2006) and Barbara Glanz (2002).
