Marriage has now become a countercultural institution. In its true essence marriage is an act of becoming one and giving oneself to someone else. It is certainly impossible for two people to remain separate after being united. Marriage which is selfless, faces opposition in today’s society as it is a part of a self-centered society. Today’s popular culture is focused on ‘me’ and a selfish culture. “We can experience both survival and happiness outside the institution of marriage. Someone who looks for others for fulfillment may cling more desperately to their partner eventually causing unnecessary conflict” (Fossett III and Fossett 69).

The right to privacy is a right that supports this notion of me. Married women benefit from marriage with better health than single women. They also have a more sound financial status. Also, the rates of domestic violence also decrease with married women. Men also benefit from the institute of marriage.

They also have financial and emotional advantages. The quality of life and health of a married man has proven to be better than that of a single man.
