Extract of sample "Pursuing Sociology"

Personal ment My interest in pursuing a career that involves working with and engaging people from diverse backgrounds has never been so high. It is my opinion that I would fit into social work perfectly than any other profession owing to the fact that I am very sociable and love working with other people and learning from them and about them. I find it fun to engage other people in talks about social matters and have the capacity to make fast friends, which I feel is an essential requirement for an individual interested in doing social work. Most importantly, my strong problem-solving skills makes me suited for the field of sociology as it would help me to effectively find solutions to people’s problems whenever they are distressed and need help, a service which is perfectly rendered with only individuals with extensive knowledge on sociology. Born in Macao and studied in Canada (Grade 9-12) and now in California in the United States, I have first hand experience on how different cultures shape the lives of individuals into who they grow to be. Developing a deep comprehension of cultural diversity and the link between cultural and political contexts is not only important for individuals relocating from one part of the world to another, but also for finding a lasting solution for many problems around the world that emanate from cultural differences. Based on my personal experiences, I am convinced more than ever that it would be worthwhile to further my by taking sociology as my major. This would enable me to study different social and political contexts and contribute positively to the development of the society and making the world a better place to live in through using my knowledge to proactively contribute to finding solutions to social problems facing my country and the world at large. Sincerely, my passion to pursue sociology is burning more than ever before. My grades from Canada are wonderful and there is no doubt that they will earn me a chance to study sociology, the subject of my dream. While in Canada, we were taught critical thinking and research skills. I ensured that my passion to become a top sociologist globally was in course by taking remedial classes for numerous foreign languages including English. Engaging is several charity events such as cleaning hospitals around the school, engaging in community services programs such as educating the public about the dangers of smoking, importance of family planning and the importance of providing equal chances for education for both boy and girl child gave me a lot of experience, which in intend to supplement with furthering my education in sociology. During my engagement in charity events, I realized that to become a successful sociologist, multilingual your ability is a powerful tool as it enables ease of communication with your subjects. I am a dedicated individual who ensures timely completion of my assignments. My focus is usually on finding solutions to my problems rather than giving significant attention to the problems. I usually look at problems as new learning opportunities to enable me to develop my problem-solving skills further. Back in Canada, my excellent communication skills enabled me to convey important information to my peers and I believe this quality is an important aspect in successful career as a sociologist. Without sociology, it would be practically impossible to understand the issues surrounding contemporary life. Sociology is a profession that touches on social dimension of the society thus imparts important information about the general aspects on how each society functions. It has been my wish ever since I was a child to pursue sociology because of the problems that have kept Macao, my birthplace, not such an interesting place to live in. Macao has a unique problem of gambling. Individuals usually lose hope in life, especially after losing in gambling games. Not a single sane person from Macao would object to the fact that gambling has an adverse impact on metal wellness of individuals, but how can this lifestyle, which is part and parcel of Macao, be corrected without any informed knowledge about the society? Studying sociology can never be of less importance to me when I am focused on changing not only my birthplace, but other parts of the world where people are suffering from the consequences of wrong decisions either made by them or their governments through ratification of socially unsound policies. Being part of China, where cultural practices have worked effortlessly to oppress women, it has been my desire to reverse this situation. Even though the government is trying to implement laws that will ensure equality among different genders, Macao is still a place where women are oppressed and never considered as equal with men. With numerous other problems in education, transport, ethnic relations, income inequalities, housing problems, especially in urban areas, air pollution, deviant behaviors and crime among others, the government has been trying to develop policy measures that would help to improve the situation. However, without the help of a qualified sociologist, these attempts would prove to be futile as no one understands the society better than a professional sociologist. This fact has always kept my hopes of pursuing sociology burning as it is the only course that I believe will enable me to understand the societies around the world and know how best to engage with the in pursuit of common interests and goals aimed at making life better. Everyday, societies face different social, economic and political challenges, which practically impact people’s lives. It is my belief that pursuing sociology as a profession will present me with an opportunity to develop deeper understanding of social issues. It will also enable me to learn in me the relevant theories and ideas that are crucial in finding solutions to social problems within the society. It is my conviction that the world can be made a better place to live in by developing in-depth understanding of the social world, which is the fundamental focus of sociology. I am interested in pursuing sociology because in consider it to provide a strong grounding for clear understanding of the society and the problems facing individuals, especially in the contemporarily world characterized with revolutionary changes facilitated by globalization. Assessing the nature of programs that you present for your students, I am totally convinced that your institution will be the best place where I can develop extensive skills on sociology with practical experience fundamental for success in this field involving diverse cultural study. It is my hope that I will be granted a chance to pursue my dream course and fulfill my childhood dreams of transforming the world and making it a better place to live in. Read More
