The year 1993 saw the establishment of a Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which noted that such violence is mainly committed by persons of the opposite gender or family members (Renzetti and Edleson, 2010). A rather interesting assertion, however, is that violence against women can also be perpetrated by the state itself through the deprivation of women’s rights and privileges. Governments and different organizations across the globe work actively to eradicate the problem of violence against women. Through a resolution, the UN designated the date of the 25th November the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Violence against women is a critical social mechanism through which women are forced to acquire a subordinate position in comparison to their male counterparts (Steinmetz and Straus, 2003). The essence of the poster highlights the ongoing fight against the type of violence in question and plays a significant role in the overall elimination of violence against women. The poster implies various types of violence against women. These include domestic violence, which refers to violence against women that is perpetrated by persons with whom women have intimate relationships. This form of violence is also referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV). The effects of domestic violence within the scope of total violence against women are understandable – nearly 40-70% of violent murders against women are committed by their boyfriends and husbands (Purdy, French and Teays, 1998). Studies show that violence does not have to be always physical, but can be also psychological or verbal. Rape can be considered a form of both physical and psychological ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
