An example is if jobs are given specifically to new migrants, rather than being offered to the long term resident population. Another example might be having all women short lists. The term is especially used when such discrimination results from policies which have been set up to correct possible discrimination against minority or otherwise disadvantaged group members. Sometimes it is referred to as affirmative action, which sounds good, but has also been described as ‘a necessary, but imperfect, remedy for an intractable social disease.’
The various groups concerned may be defined by size, ethnic group, race, religious affiliation, or gender, as well as other possible factors. Such discrimination may be deliberately aiming to redress various inequalities, in cases where members of minority groups have been denied access to privileges which are available to members of the majority group.
According to Barron’s Law Dictionary (2003) the term has been used to describe the practice of reserving places for minorities in schools and in corporate promotions, and the hiring of minority group members, such as Afro-Americans who have less job seniority than possible white candidates.

This paper is an analysis of two such situations of discrimination. Being of the minority of Chinese descent living in the United States, I am often subjected to racial discrimination on matters that might not even relate to me personally. Such prejudice is a result of the generalized misconceptions (Ruchlis 2) that people have fostered about the Chinese population in the United States, and I often fall victim to such stereotypic prejudice (Ruchlis 1).
Since Asians are a minority in USA, they have to face several problems due to this deprivation or discrimination. The four types of discriminations I will be discussing in this essay are- double jeopardy, Institutional discrimination, Glass ceiling and Reverse Discrimination.
There has been considerable debate over whether affirmative action is an attempt at leveling an already unfair playing field for minorities or reverse discrimination against whites (Pincus, 2008; Bruno, 1995; Crossby & Cordova, 1996). Although support or opposition for affirmative action is not necessarily based along racial and ethnic lines, the discussion has remained controversial since its implementation.
