This sort of behavior is unheard of during a Presidential address to Congress and the ramifications for this Representative should have been scathing. Oddly enough, they were not. CNN reports that within 24 hours, Joe Wilson had received more than $200,000 in political donations. Seeking to address the incredible amount of disrespect Barack Obama, the first African-American President of the United States, has to face now, as well as had to face while campaigning in the primaries, former President Jimmy Carter labeled the almost daily assault on President Obama as “racist”. Is racism alive and well in US politics? If so, what are the effects of discrimination and reverse discrimination on politics in this country? Seeking to address these questions and many more, the following will explore discrimination in politics in this country. We now turn to a thorough yet concise overview of what is meant by discrimination and reverse discrimination (CNN, 2009; BBC, 2009).
Discrimination in politics is unfortunately much more prevalent than most people think. This form of discrimination means that certain groups of individuals face barriers, both hidden and overt, to their active participation and inclusion in the political theatre. Insidious yet pervasive, discrimination affects all types of people but is particularly harmful to certain group of individuals. Accordingly, people of color, women and people with disabilities face a variety of impediments to their full participation in society.
