Firstly, the cigarette smokers argue that whoever smokes, it is their preference and that they have the right to choose what they do. They tend to look at tobacco regulations and a ban on the cigarette as “paternalistic” and emphasis on “individual choice”. Moreover, some of them even add that they are socially responsible and that they don’t smoke at home where children are, and so on. Nevertheless, the tobacco industry is the key supporter of the movement against such legislation. They present the social and constitutional rights to promote their view. Even though profit is its primary reason, indisputably, to answer a human rights activist who questions about the health risks of second-hand smoke, the industry points out its contribution to the economy and to society in terms of employment and business opportunities. In a way, it tries to project the brighter side of the economic benefits made possible by the industry in order to hit back in all possible ways to dilute any effective action against cigarette and smoking. Not only do the individuals but the industry also creates “powerful images of independence and autonomy” in cigarette promotion and advertising. To illustrate, a ban decided on the promotion of tobacco products in the USA was considered “unconstitutional and “ineffective in reducing the prevalence of smoking”. Defenders also point out the lack of scientific evidence against the harms of cigarette smoke and at the same time not ignoring the health risks. To combat this argument against cigarettes they safely resort to individualism and free choice. They say that any health consequences are “voluntary” and the decision to smoke is an individual’s choice. The industry claims that it provides the consumer with the truths about smoking cigarettes, for example. Hence, they insist that the industry must not be held responsible and hence a ban on the industry is unsubstantiated and unfair. On the other hand, however, anti-smoking campaigns, environmental activists and healthcare professionals forward strong arguments. There is a question as to how much free be the choice to decide, especially, to smoke. WHO, a strong opponent of smoking highlights the socially irresponsible nature of the tobacco industry. It blames the sector for putting “its own economic gain ahead of the sustainable development” and “profit before life”.Although the companies downplay the economic problems associated with tobacco and cigarette production, wasted resources and effect on productivity are so evident. For instance, WHO indicates the “high public health costs of treating tobacco-caused diseases” as a critical economic impact of smoking caused by the health risks to smokers and non-smokers. In addition, health sector led by WHO is not ready to accept the claim of tobacco industry of its innocence by simply blaming the individuals for their choices or its claim that it presents information truthfully to cigarette consumers. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
