He visited David (the artist) in New York, but he did not see him. Then he went to Amy next who is in Chicago who said she cannot come because of Jack, her son who is sick. When Frank arrived though he realized Jack is not sick. He noticed the awkward interaction in the house when Amy’s husband Jeff arrived. Amy informed her dad that she cannot entertain him because of her work in an advertising company which she owns. So he left for Denver where his son Robert is working as a conductor. Upon arriving at the place where Robert is practicing though, Frank found out that he is not a conductor but a percussion player.
He cannot entertain him too because of a concert out of town. His next stop then is Rosie in Las Vegas. She is a dancer who picked Frank up with a stretch limousine and brought him in an expensive looking apartment. During the night when he was with Rosie, a friend asked her to take care of a baby (Everybody’s Fine). The life of each of Frank’s children seemed perfect but he knew that they were hiding things from him. On the way home from Rosie, he had a heart attack and he dreamt of confronting his four children about the lies.

The dynamics within the family can affect its members. In the film, Frank is the kind of person who can strictly affect the decision making process of his children. On the other hand, his wife whom his children used to always confide and talk to became their important support system. Frank’s strict demeanor forced his children to lie to him regarding their own life, in terms of the life they are leading and their career. Family members can positively or negatively affect each other. In the case of David, who experienced the most pressure from Frank in becoming an artist, resorted to substance abuse.
The possible reasons include the fact that he did not want to be artist but he did it for Frank. Another is the pressure that he considered himself not successful enough for his father to be proud of. The openness of the children to their mother is another dynamics within the family. She had created a system wherein she only expressed good news and events to Frank to lessen the pressure their father had on the children. Based on the theory, every member of the family has a role that contributes to the dynamics of the whole system.
In this case, the father is the force that pushes the children
