Individuals are active in making their own lives explains how an individual has to indulge in decision making basing on how he/she should adopt and live under certain circumstances and situations. Social life is very important in nurturing the life of an individual; there is no value in being a social misfit because it is the basis of living a normal life. There are choices to be considered in making your own life as per the scientist, such that these choices direct an individual towards making their own preferred life. Society forms the most important aspect when it comes to making your own life such that it underpins the manner in which the choices are made. Every individual has his own society upon which gave them life; therefore the choices that one makes in life are narrowed down to the society they have been under. Society dictates morals in every step or choices concerning an individual’s life. Breaking down an individual’s life as per society expectations revolve around the spiritual, mental and social aspects. These aspects determine the life of an individual, such that an individual has been judged according to the society he/she grew up. People have regarded society as the platform for molding and nurturing the behavior of an individual. To this fact, it is therefore expected that an individual will have certain characteristics attributed to the society that molded them. In today’s society, there has been a revolution in the way people live their lives, people no longer consider a societal upbringing of an individual and have left it to become a personal decision on how to live. Let’s take a look at the two aspects that relate to individuals being active in making their own lives. The first aspect is that of connecting lives which elaborate how people are connected in their day to day life. Social aspect form part of connecting lives such that people connect by being social, connections occur when people meet and interact. Take for example students in a classroom; they have to interact with a matter of the fact that they share the same class and even seats and the instructor as well. In this case, these students will engage in social activities that will influence their academic performance. It is through interactions that these students get to connect academically (Rigg and Salamanca 2011). When it comes to making individuals life, the decision is influenced on how wide the social network covers, such that if an individual is connected to many people, they will tend to make decision basing on the level of interaction made while trying to connect. Sports in school were established with the aim of enhancing talents of students and encouraging participation and also to exercise the body. According to psychology, sports help in enabling students to realize their potential in various areas such as talent, confidence, their abilities and even social life. Connecting lives can also imply self-realization such that through sports, a student will be able to realize their confidentiality and also their self-esteem. Self- realization is a way in which an individual is able to make decisions that will better their way of life, it enables one to identify his inner self and focus on how to manage his life through actions, expressions, and communication. Self- esteem is the realization that no one is better than you and that every individual is unique in their own way. It is obvious that one’s judgment and how they perceive things is totally different from someone else. Self-esteem boost individual’s confidence in decisions they make and it contributes to the fact that individuals are active in making their own lives. Being proactive in all areas that pertain individual life contribute immensely decisions to be made in life. The second aspect on ordering live gives an insight on how decisions are influenced by social order. Psychologists have identified a disorder that affects the manner in which people make choices. For example social disorder, which has impacted people's choices in making their lives. Ordering lives gives an insight of life disorder that inhibits one from living a preferred life. Ordering lives gives an insight on what aspect holds the society together such that these aspects influence the making of one’s life. Work, for example, is an aspect that contributes to the manner in which a person will choose to live his life, it is from work that an individual derives factors that will influence personal choice. Take for example the level of interaction at workplace, the time which one is supposed to clock in and clock out of work, the nature of work and also the pay. All these factors have influenced personal choices (Prosser and Reid 2010). The family is also another factor which influences the social life of an individual, social disorder comes as a result of the nature of an individual family. For a society to be identified, it should involve family such that an individual is believed to have been brought up by a family, consisting of two parents or one and to some a guardian. An individual with the social disorder will blame the family for not exposing him to activities that would nurture his social life. Family impacts the decision of an individual such that one would make choices according to how he grew in the family. Individual’s welfare is also another determinant of decisions that an individual makes, social disorder is regarded as the welfare of an individual that will impact on decisions to be made. According to an upright society, a person who is considered morally upright is expected to make better choices. Also, a person whose welfare is sound is expected to make better choices, unlike an individual whose welfare is below average. Health is determinant in decision making, such that it enables one to be active and of sound mind so as to make choices that impact on their lives. Individuals are constrained in various ways in making their lives This statement reflects upon the way people make choices pertaining their lives and the way these choices could also be constrained by other factors. It tries to evaluate the fact that decision making concerning life has to be influenced by many factors that result to an individual living an upright life. There are several factors that constraint individual way of making life which are; Social development, this is a wide factor that has been considered a detriment in making an individual’s life. From the above discussion on individual’s activeness in making their lives, we can also argue that social development is a constraint. Social development is important in an individual’s life such that without social development, a person’s life is considered empty. However, for a person to make life choices, the level of social development influences how these choices will be made. If an individual has no social life, it will be difficult for him to make better choices in life, this is because those factors that influence his decisions are absent in his life. Social contractions such as the inability to interact due to fear, critics, confidence and self-esteem affects the way in which a person would make life choices. It is obvious that there are stages that an individual goes through in growth of life, for example, an adult and a teenager would have different opinions regarding a certain matter. This is because the juvenile is still under mental development stage and hence their opinions are centered compared to that of an adult. Therefore the social development of an individual should contribute to positive growth so as to enable directing the positive energy towards making choices that build one’s life. However, if social development is surrounded by negative energy, there will be a consequence in making life choices (Thompson, 1967). When it come connecting lives, we find that making life has been hindered by connections and disconnections. Social science shed light on connections that people make especially socially. These connections happen because there has been a disconnection somewhere else. Take for example an individual relocating from one country to another. It is obvious that there will be a disconnection from the previous country and a connection in the present country. When this occurs, decisions in life will be affected because, in as much as one is active in making life choice, connection and disconnection in life will affect these choices. Another example of a connection that constraints making life choice are the disconnection from society; Psychologist has proved that people seek identity through society whereby if a person belongs to certain society, they have a feeling of belonging and hence they derive their identity from that particular society. Perhaps taking a look at those children in streets will help to understand the consequences of disconnecting lives. They depict a negative image because they lack recognition and identity; they make life choices basing on the environment they are under. People living in slums feel disconnected from life such that they regard themselves as poor. When this occurs in life, it inhibits one from making choices that could better their lives. Inequality is another constraint that impact on making life choices when one feels they are denied their rights and other are given the freedom; it will affect the way in which decisions are made. Take for example racism; this is where the majority are the minority in terms of color and race. Where there is racism, the minority is undermined and they tend to make decision centered on their race. This is an aspect of inequality that according to social science, it impacts the way in which people will relate. Social development is affected when there is inequality because it makes the group feel out of place in the society (Hughes and Fergusson 2004). Another form of inequality comes with social class whereby the society has developed a space between the poor and the rich. Poor in this case are those whose living standards are way below average while the rich are those whose living standards are above average. When there is a difference between the poor and the rich, it results to inequalities in making decision such that opinions of the poor are neglected while those of the rich are considered. A society that identifies the poor and rich will always favor the rich and this is a disadvantage to the poor since they are not able to take part in decisions that make up a society. Social disorder impacts on the behavior of an individual, according to ordering lives, it is clear that behavior also constraints life choices. It is expected of a society to ensure that an individual grows up with certain expected behaviors. The reason as to why there are morals to be instilled at each stage of an individual life growth is because these morals will influence the manner in which they make decisions. A person’s behavior will influence the choices they make, an individual who is morally upright will make decisions that are sound and realistic and therefore these decisions will guide him on life. Social life also affects the behavior of an individual such that a negative social life will lead to bad behavior which will also affect life choices. An individual with the social disorder will have a different behavior which is a result of the choices made under a disorder. This, therefore, means that an individual can make choices on how to live his life; however, these choices are also impacted by the surrounding upon which the decisions are made. The constraints result from the environment in which an individual has been brought up such that the life choices of an urban dweller are totally different from the life choices of rural dweller. Factors surrounding urban and rural contribute to the manner in which individuals perceive things and make decisions. Age is also a constraint in decisions making whereby the perceptions of individual changes as they grow. Reflection Social science gives an insight on how human being evolves and adapt to the environment they are born and nurtured under. The statement that ‘Individuals are active in making their own lives but are constrained in various ways in doing so’ is true. In my view, an individual determines how he will live his life basing on decisions he makes. To survive and live in this changing world is difficult and hence it requires people who can make concrete decisions. Making life choices is important because they will give the way in which an individual will carry out hi day to day activities. I base my opinion on social life whereby it influences decisions of an individual. It is important to focus on social growth to enhance appropriate life decisions that will lead to personal development and improve the way in which people live. I, therefore, conclude the above statement that there are four pillars that determine human development which are; mental, physical, spiritual and social development.
