Unemployment in Australia Student’s Name: Instructor’s Name: Course Code: Date of Submission: In the recent years, Australia has been rated as among the fastest growing economies in the world which is ranked at seven percent unemployment rate (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011). This unemployment level is very low and therefore this means that the country’s economy is growing pretty well like in the developed countries. However if we look critically at the real unemployment rates in the country, we find that actually there is high unemployment rate especially among the youth. One of the major causes of unemployment in the economy of Australia is as a result of the tourism management. Unemployment leads to dragging back the economy of the country because the government collects less revenue from the employed people. This high level of unemployment of youth in Australia attracted the attention of many scholars and they have been conducting research concerning unemployment as a result of the sector tourism management. Besides tourism management as a cause of unemployment in Australia, the other factors include; social policy which involves the strategies put by the government to reduce unemployment, crime, planning of the government projects and social justice. Unemployment is whereby an individual does not have a job in any economy (Muir et al 2003). However there are those who are self employed. Rate of unemployment is calculated by dividing the number of the unemployed in the economy with the number of employed people in a given territory. Since the industrialization started in Australia a good number of people secured jobs through government plans to construct industries which created jobs for people. Since then the number of people migrating from rural areas to urban areas is very high and has led to lack of adequate job opportunities to employ all people. Various sectors are poorly managed like the tourism sector hence there are no jobs created by many public sectors. Other reasons for unemployment include high illiteracy level and many families are poor financially to start businesses. From the research which has been conducted, unemployment rate in Australia between the ages of 16-20 was 21 percent back in the year 2003. Among the employed, there was a reason of illiteracy (Muir et al 2003). Some were not educated while some were educated but could not secure employment opportunities. The countries of the commonwealth, came together to try and solve the issue of unemployment. One of the issues that were discussed to is to help the unemployed get jobs by creating job opportunities. They also discussed on to create jobs in rural areas so that there is no rapid rural urban migration. Social justice was also discussed as well as social policies. Finally, they encouraged member countries to ensure that the youth acquire necessary skills to enable them secure jobs. There have been many debates concerning unemployment among the scholars. They have argued that Australia is among the fastest growing economies in the world although on the other side the level of unemployment among the youths is high. Many of the youths of Australia involve themselves in part time jobs because they are flexible to meet the changing cultures and demands of the youth. Unemployment is high in the whole world not only in Australia. Most of the jobs are occupied by the aged people. According to the research, unemployment among the youth can only be reduced if the aged people are given equal opportunities as the young people without discrimination (Tomlinson 2001). In addition effective planning in the tourism sector attracts more investors into the tourism industry thus create employment opportunities. Unemployment can also be reduced if the various governments can set up strategies to create job opportunities among its people. Various sectors should be managed effectively like the tourism sector so that it will improve the economy of a country as well as creating jobs for the people. Educational standards should also be improved among the various nations. The researchers also noted out that among the reasons of unemployment include the shrinking market for the jobs. Tourism management can also create jobs for the people if it is properly managed so that it expands and create more jobs per year than it is employing now. Among the factors influencing education levels include part time courses offered, the development of software and part time employment. Many people are engaging in the part time learning which increases the number of people who are skilled. Another issue discovered is the high rate of youth turnover than the turnover of the adults. Youths are more flexible in their jobs than adults thus they are better valued in job places than the adult employees. Finally, eliminating crimes is the major factor for improving management tourism sector to improve the employment rates. My point of view concerning unemployment in Australia is that it is possible to eliminate unemployment in the country. This can only be achieved if the government and the non governmental organizations work together to improve the management of several sectors of the economy which will create job opportunities for the people of Australia (Richardson 2006). The fact youths are the most unemployed means that the future skills are not being trained. The youths mean that they are the future economy of the country and therefore they should be ignored in terms of employment. The rate of unemployment will continues to exist if the government does not take necessary measures to create job opportunities for its people. With the help of youth oriented programs, unemployment can be reduced because these programs take into account the social justices of the youth. Measures of outsourcing facilities and skills should be regulated so that local youth can get employment opportunities instead of outsourcing. This strategy will create jobs for the people of Australia. The available data and information is useful because it gives us the real phenomena concerning employment in the world and in particular Australia. This information gives clear evidence that unemployment in Australia is due to illiteracy, unstable family backgrounds, outsourcing of skills and the changing rates of economy. In order to create jobs for the people of Australia the government agencies and non governmental organizations should be encouraged to create jobs and be discouraged from outsourcing skills which can be locally available (Brewster & Rindfuss 2000). The education systems should be upgraded to offer quality education to the people so that the youth will get the skills required to work in competitive firms in the economy. This information has enabled me to understand the real situations of unemployment in Australia and other countries of the world. Having unemployment rate of four to five percent it can be said that unemployment in Australia is not a big challenging issue (Chapman & Kapuscinisk 2000). Though the literature pointed out that major unemployment issue is among the youths. This unemployment can be eliminated if the measures and strategies are put in place to create jobs. The issue of unemployment is growing fast but the statistics given by the various governments in the developed countries do not show the clear indication of the unemployment rate. Therefore there is need to alert the people of Australia and other countries on the rising rate of unemployment and its dangers. This will sensitize the public to start generating activities that will earn them income instead of depending fully on the government and this will help to improve the economy of the country. Considering the existing literature about the unemployment in Australia it can be argued that Australia is among the developed countries because its level of unemployment is low compared to developing countries which have levels of unemployment rates. According to this paper unemployment among the youth can be seen as a major issue affecting many countries both developed and developing countries. According to this literature it can be argued that among the strategies that can be applied to reduce the level of unemployment is through effective planning of the country issues, eliminating social injustice in the society and create equality among all people, setting measures to eliminate crimes which scare a way investors in tourism sector, improving the education level of the people and managing the number of birth rates (Deewr 2010). A small number of people can be easily satisfied with their needs than when the birth rate is more than the ability of the government to provide jobs for the rapid growing population (Brewster & Rindfuss 2000). There are also other factors that are associated with the unemployment of youth which include part time jobs which give the youth little time to concentrate on their studies. Lack of adequate education among the youth on the other hand leads to lack of adequate skills to secure competent jobs in the market. In this unemployment context, it can be noted that unemployment can be eliminated with efforts of the government, individuals and international organizations. These core institutions will help the economy of the country to grow by creating jobs to the youth who are the future country. On the same note, tourism sector can be a stimulator of economy if it is well managed to create jobs for the people. Therefore according to this literature review it can be noticed that the government of Australia together with other institutions are working on the measures to eliminate the unemployment rate especially among the youth which seems to be growing.
