I started by dreaming, but I decided to take a bold step and created my dream into a reality. It has not been a smooth journey, but I thank my family and friends who stood by me through thick and thin. The essence of beauty has evolved from one country to the other, person to person, and even from one group to another. As is said, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder,” but to women, beauty is translated to mean something different in all angles. To others, beauty is portrayed in their eyes, the tongue, and even the ears. However, all these beauty forms are unified into love because it is something that never changes. Moreover, it is present in all variations. Thereby, media houses have generated income through the creation of an advertisement that are ‘eye-catching and appealing’ in malls, on television. And even on billboards. Stephanie’s background As a young girl at the age of six years, I already had mastered a few skills on how to apply make-up. I was born in a family of eight children and my elder sisters always applied make-up before leaving the house. My curiosity led me to try out their gadgets one fine morning before they awoke. However, my older sister found me applying make-up and was impressed because I had done a very thorough and neat job. She encouraged me to continue perfecting my skill since it could land me a very good opportunity in the future. Her words: “practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect,” have been an inspiration to me because I was able to concentrate on my studies and attained good grades, which enabled me, join one of the best schools in the country. My parents were very supportive people and encouraged me to never lose hope or sight of what I want to become in the future. It is true that I was a good make-up artist at an early age, and my school decided to support me. They were able to use my skills during talent shows and other functions in the school. Through these events, I was able to raise funds and bought make-up kits in intervals. This made me see how expensive beauty is because the equipment I needed were all pricey. However, I did not lose hope and pressed on because I knew and understood “my dreams were valid.” If I can remember well, the first client I had to work on was my dear sister whom I owe a lot. Family My parents have been my source of pride and joy at all times. I have been able to call my mother and seek advice during very odd hours. My father would call me up every once in a while to ensure that I had all the peace I need to be able to start the next day. These small gestures o love made me spread my wings and share with my clients on how I am blessed to have such lovely parents. It is true that quarrel with my sisters and brothers over very trivial things. However, we also love and respect each other. Therefore, we ensure that none of us lacks the basic requirements for survival in the earth. Growing up and being the last born made me have a fun-filled upbringing because I was encapsulated among very protective sisters and brothers. Their support was also immeasurable because they contributed in buying my first make-up kit. What made me shed a tear is the fact that, they imported the kit. Therefore, I had genuine equipment, which was mostly loved by many of the clients from the up-market. My brothers would bring their female friends, once in a while, and prompted me to work without becoming tired. Concentrating with my studies was not hard because I planned my time well. It has been easy and hard managing time, as a teenager, but I managed to be virtuous. This enabled me be disciplined, and I was glad to have elder brothers and sisters who taught me the value and importance of time management discipline. Life experiences I have managed to work with the best in the industry and would like to have more opportunities to interact and talk with them. The experiences have enabled me to reach where I am today, because I had the urge and zeal to be a make-up artist. This business has taught me how to be patient and understanding when it comes to relating with people in the society. I have also managed to organize sessions where I provide my services to the less privileged people in the society. To me, this is giving back to society because I have been blessed and want to share my happiness with others in society. I was able to lose some of my equipment, but life did not end. Al I did is to dust myself and moved on because many people depended on me to be strong and attentive. I have crossed roads with prominent people who promise you heaven, but fail. As such, I am very keen to avoid being duped because my business is my pride and joy. There is also a time when she managed to work on one of the ugliest human beings in the community. When she finished working on her, she could not help, but cry because she was overwhelmed with joy. She was able to raise her face and walk uprightly as Joey puts it. Personality Stephanie is calm and honest human being who likes to leave the client feeling happy, rejuvenated, and all smiles because of the good work. It is not easy to stay happy always because I am human. However, it is important to remain calm when talking with the client because they are the most important individuals in any form of business. According to Eunice, Stephanie is one individual who likes to give importance to value and quotes, “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” She is a value-oriented person who looks at the interests of her consumers because they make her who she is today. She also asserts that, “There’s no luck in business. There’s only drive, determination, and more drive.” She has managed also to work on some of her products, which she made while on vacation. Some of her own products are appreciated by others in her society because they were made by one of their own. Reputation According to Joey, Stephanie’s reputation level among her peers has increased tremendously. She has managed to relate well with teenagers and adolescents who have different tastes and preferences. Moreover, she has managed to capture their mood and style on different occasions. Those who have interacted with her, find her to be a warm individual who puts the needs of her clients first. This policy has made her famous around the school and majority of the ladies go to her for advice and make-up techniques and ideas. It is true that she has been in business for long, and all is owed to her family business-oriented-lineage. She mingles with her clients with such prowess is that of a lioness protecting her cub. I enjoy tagging along with her when she goes to work because I get to learn more on work etiquette. It is not easy to maintain your cool when interacting with consumers, but she has managed to pool through even with the tough and annoying clients. How she does it is still a mystery to me. However, I love what she has done to motivate and improve the self-esteem of most girls with acne and other skin conditions. She has given them their life back and to Stephanie, putting a smile on a sad face is her motivation. Eunice also concurs with what Joey has said and recalled of an instance where she managed to change the mindset of one girl who was new to the school. This is because she was being sidelined by other students due to her adolescent pimples all over her face. The girl got acquainted with Stephanie, who tried to change her thinking concerning her beauty, which comes from within. The girl was hesitant at first, but after Stephanie’s ‘magic touch,’ she was all smiles and managed to overlook her adolescent stage in a positive way that enabled her mingle and make friends. Stephanie always says that, ‘beauty is something that is changing since it evolves within a nation’s different cultures and societies. Hence, it is breathing, and the blind can also experience it through sound, smell, and taste. The world of make-up makes Stephanie happy and fulfilled in life. She has managed to open several stores and salons dealing with make-up of the eyes, tongue, body, and even the spirit. A “well-behaved woman seldom makes history.” I have managed to convince others in the society that beauty is not artificial and should be done from within to be able to portray the inner being.
