Personal Well-being Student’s Name: Instructor’s Name: Course Code: Date of Submission: Personal wellbeing, its outcomes and ways to measure it Personal wellbeing is a state of being happy, having self-confidence, maintaining good physical health and ensuring that the life of an individual is sustainable. It involves taking care of the body’s health. In medical terms, wellbeing means that the person is concerned about his or her health and takes of the body from getting injuries and illness (Lombardo & Eichinger 2004). In order for someone to be considered wellbeing, the following factors are considered; the physical body of the person, the diet someone eats if it is balanced or not, the physical exercises someone does daily, the peace of mind and the environment in which the individual lives which include the financial resources and access to health facilities (Cameron et al 2003). On the other hand for someone to be wellbeing psychologically, there are some factors which needs to be considered like motivation, job satisfaction and adequate skills. When a person is satisfied with the job he or she is doing, there are high chances that the person will be happy and will have self confidence which improves his or her wellbeing (Robone et al 2008). In this regard therefore, personal wellbeing can be said to both physical, emotional and psychological. All these factors when combined together, they improve the personal wellbeing of an individual (Cameron et al 2003). There are many consequences of personal wellbeing. The first consequence is that personal wellbeing improves self confidence of a person because the person has high self esteem which enables the individual to develop positive attitude towards his or her actions (Park et al 2005). From the research which has been conducted, it is clear that happiness of a person is as a result of the work the person does and the satisfaction the person derives from that work (Park et al 2005). Therefore when the person is satisfied with the work he or she does, there are high chances that the person will be comfortable with life and develop positive emotions leading to better accomplishment of tasks (Keyes & Haidt 2003). Another benefit of wellbeing is that it promotes positive emotions which in turn determine how work teams function in an organization. Positive emotions are as a result of happiness the person develops when he or she is happy (Keyes & Haidt 2003). From the research which has been conducted with 60 business teams, the performance of each team differed and the reason was that different team members had different emotions. The 60 teams were ranked into high performance, medium performance and low performance and these ranks were based on the productivity of each team and the satisfaction of the customers. The teams’ members with high emotions performed better than other teams showing a significance relationship between the high emotions and team performance (Keyes & Haidt 2003). In this regard therefore, it can be said that wellbeing can influence the functionality of teams in an organization by enabling group members to interact well and exchange ideas freely. Also wellbeing of an individual promotes happiness rather than depression. Many people think depression comes only as a result of a way of life people live like lack of jobs but from the research conducted, depression is associated with lack of wellbeing of an individual (Linely & Joseph 2003). Lack of a job can influence the life of a person because it causes stress to an individual leading to depression. When an individual is in good physical psychological conditions, he or she is likely to develop a positive attitude towards life and could minimize depression leading to better concentration of issues like in the work place (Linely & Joseph 2003). Wellbeing can be measured using number of ways. First, it can be measured using standardized questions so as to extract the information from the respondents. The questions can either be administered or can be through an interview (Robone et al 2008). Some of the questions which can be asked to know the wellbeing of an individual include; how satisfied are you with the job? How do you feel happy or sad? How do you value your value? And how do you feel in terms of motivation? These questions can help to know the wellbeing of an individual (Robone et al 2008). Another way of measuring wellbeing is the utility based measuring instrument. This is where an individual is measured in terms of preference to a certain state. In this technique, a single item is used to measure the preference of individual and then a conclusion can be drawn to understand the wellbeing of individual. For example the researcher can use global satisfaction to collect data concerning wellbeing of individuals (Andersen & Davidson 1997). Other methods which can be used to measure personal well-being are the reports from peers which show how different groups of people are satisfied with life or a particular variable and also using the observation methods where the researcher conducts some survey concerning how people conduct their operations and can easily conclude the emotions of the people (Andersen & Davidson 1997). Through these methods, the wellbeing of individuals can be known or measured to what extent different individuals are satisfied. Identification of personal strengths Personal strengths can be divided into 6 virtues which are then subdivided to make up 24 strengths (Peterson & Selgman 2004). I failed to any performance issues on completing the action plans 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Based on the above 24 strengths and myself reflection together with my partner, I can come up with the following top ten personal strengths; Creativity which is the ability to think new ways of doing things. Love of learning that is the taking in new skills and new knowledge from other sources or topics (Andersen & Davidson 1997). I also have courage that has always helped me to achieve tasks despite oppositions that may be external or internal. Bravery is also my strength because I face challenges with courage and also the threats. Finally, I have the strength of kindness as I always try to do well to others and favors. Considering my strengths above, it is easier to select best five strengths. The first strength is the creativity strength, there is bravery strength. There are also courage and love strengths and the strength of kindness. The above are the top five strengths according to my analysis. Selection and justification of the best strength Based on the above selection of the top five strengths, the best strength among the top five can be easily identified and that is the creativity. This is the topmost strength because it enables me to develop other like courage because through creativity, I will be able to develop new ways of doing things and I will have trust in myself. I also selected this strength because it encompasses most of the other strengths and therefore it is a major strength. Creativity is ability to develop new ways of accomplishing tasks by an individual. This is achieved by being innovative in the operations and developing alternative strategies for conducting operations better. Through creativity, one can easily develop self-wellbeing and improve on the emotions leading to satisfaction by the individual. Self-esteem can be achieved when an individual is creative in life leading to self-actualization. Creativity is a strength that enables people to develop other strengths. For example when I am creative, I will develop alternative ways of accomplishing tasks when there is a situation which needs attention and the management team is not around to provide guideline. Through creativity as strength a person is able to develop wellbeing because he or she will have self confidence hence increase his or her self esteem which makes a person happy. In this regard therefore, creativity is the strength that enables individuals to value their lives better, become happy and have self confidence which all lead to improved personal wellbeing. Creativity has many outcomes including the ability to appreciate different world perspectives. Through creativity, an individual can develop ways of appreciating his or her culture and stop thinking that the other culture is superior (Wilber 2000). This is especially when an individual invents a new idea like in other cultures. In this effort, the individual will learn to appreciate his or her culture. Creativity also leads to better communication. For instance, an individual can innovate new ways of communicating like pictures and this improves the relationship with other members of the team promoting the strength of love. In my personal experience, creativity has promoted self confidence in me (Wilber 2000). This is because through creativity have been able to develop new ways of accomplishing tasks with less issues at my work place thus have been able to improve my productivity and am happy with my job hence have improved my wellbeing. Also through creativity have been able to improve self esteem because have been able to realize that I can do great things at my workplace hence I have high value for my life which has led to improved personal wellbeing (Wilber 2000). However through creativity I was in bad communication with my supervisor because I wanted to create some designs to the products which did not succeed and I was blamed for the invention which broke down communication with my supervisors and the management. Therefore creativity has both positive and negative experiences (Wilber 2000). Self-development plan to increase personal wellbeing The first aspect that I will use to improve myself wellbeing plan is by applying my strength of creativity to gain satisfaction. I will try to be creative in all aspects of life and through this; I will be able to develop good relationship with other people creating a friendly environment to live in (Andrew & Yannis 2002). Through creativity strength, I will be able to achieve my tasks with fewer issues and my efforts will be appreciated and I will feel happy at my work place hence improving my personal wellbeing. To improve myself wellbeing, I will also be kind to myself. I will reward myself and try to love whatever I do so that I will be satisfied with it. In this regard I will develop passion for my work and appreciate doing it (Garibaldi & Pacelli 2008). On the other hand to be kind to myself, I will be taking day offs so that when I resume to work it will not be monotonous leading to boredom. After the day offs, I will be refreshed and come up with ideas hence avoiding depression and developing positive emotions. Through being kind to myself by taking some breaks and refreshing myself, I will break the monotony of work therefore I will enjoy doing my job avoiding stress and promote job satisfaction which will improve my personal wellbeing (Garibaldi & Pacelli 2008). I will also consider the kind of foods I take because diet greatly influences the moods of a person. By eating balanced diet, the body will get the required nutrients hence will function normally with less fatigue (Garibaldi & Pacelli 2008). This promotes good moods in my life hence I will develop positive self-wellbeing because good moods promote happiness and will enable me to avoid stress which can lead to physical injury due to lack of concentration at work especially when using a machine hence promoting personal wellbeing. Finally, I will set the target goals and objectives of which I will want to achieve. I will set goals in life which are systematic in that they are prioritized, the goals should be measurable so that I can know if am progressing or not, attainable goals which I have the potential to implement and achieve and the goals will be timely (Wilber 2000). Through these objectives I will be able to work towards achieving them. After achieving them I will be happy and know that my life is not valueless thus I will improve my personal wellbeing. An example of the objective I will want to achieve is to improve my productivity by ten percent in the next one year.
