Download file to see previous pages The theory of the self as a social product is premised upon the concepts of behaviourism, phenomenology and role theory. Behaviourism holds that the human mind is not independent in any way; rather behaviour and the development of self are dependent on the situations in the social environment. Callero (2003) noted that phenomenology focuses on the intuitive interactions of phenomena; this implies that reality is comprised of objects and activities as rationally perceived by human beings. Lastly, role theory posits that individuals are basically conformists who attempt to realize the standards that come with their roles. As such, Milliken and Schreiber (2012) suggested that group members examine each person’s responses to establish whether it is in line with that person’s allotted norms, and recommend punishment for mischief so as to ensure compliance and better role performance.
The theory of the self as a product of social factors is premised upon symbolic interactionism, which is a conceptual approach to deciphering the link between individuals and the social environment (Dionysiou, & Tsoukas, 2013). The primary concept holds that human Self as evidenced in human activities and responses to situations are comprehensible only via the exchange of important communications or social symbols. In this concept, human persons are depicted as responding to, as opposed to being forced to act in a particular way (Callero, 2003). The primary principles behind the social impacts on Self are: human persons respond to stimuli on the premise which the social environment presents to them; without social interaction, the Self would not be formed, and; social action is the result of compatibility of individual responses (Reynolds, Turner, Branscombe, Mavor, Bizumic, & Subašic, 2010). ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
