Download file to see previous pages Given the addictive nature of video games which often promote violence, hostile behaviors and aggression and their supposed position as a form of diversion, it has been questioned whether video games serve any productive purposes or are they merely a form of escapism. From the perspective of an individual, the notion of escapism can be characterized as a process through which individuals embark upon leisurely activities to disassociate themselves from the ordinary aspects of their lives which may trigger monotony and dullness that may evolve into depression or despair if escapism is not adopted to break the cycle of monotony. Relating the concept of escapism with various forms of entertainment it may be suggested that a person’s motivation for indulging in video gaming may stem from a desire to ‘escape’ what their everyday life has to offer, while, it is undeniable that some gamers may resort to playing video games to serve this purpose, this aspect is not relevant to the video gaming community as a whole and cannot define the significance of video games as a critical element of the modern social construct. The formulation of this discussion’s crux is rooted in the understanding that any activity which has the potential to trigger a transformation in individuals, make them feel like they are a part of something great, new or important and generate the creation of a parallel facet of individual identities is conducive to that society’s social construct.

According to Bissell, the promotion of narrative games allows video game developers and designers to integrate the components of the game’s story and the world in which the story is set to craft an experience for the gamer (359). However, the most critical point of this observation is that the game itself acts as a source that produces the experience rather than becoming the experience itself (Bissell 359).  The role of engaging in an experience and the development of a social construct is associated with the notion that as a phenomenon, video gaming allows individuals to become involved in a single experience that lies within a particular game and this is how shared meanings and understandings are eventually created.  ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
