Extract of sample "The Activity of Social Work"

Personal ment The activity of social work is aimed at assisting individuals to change their way of thinking for the purpose of boost economic and social professionally. It is practiced at all levels. I believe I am suitable to be part of the mission program because I am not only responsible, but I have a passion for children. I also love participating in community works. I have time management skills and I perform the tasks given to me with total dedication and diligence. I also love working in a team because it enables the sharing of ideas and ensures that the work is done within a minimal time and the output is of the required standards. I am computer literate, so I am proficient when it comes to dealing with the Office application, as well as record keeping. I possess good communication skills, which is one of the vital attributes of any social worker, since at most times, one will be subjected to giving advice to people. I am also a patient person. Most of the time a social worker might be interacting with a high tempered person; therefore, it requires the person to master the art of patience to be in a position to deal with such people. Having been raised up in an average family as the first-born, I have gone through some challenges that will enable me relate well to the tasks assigned to me as a social worker. For instance, there came a time that I had to take care of my other two siblings while my parents were at work. Given that I was only 10 years old, the task was challenging. It was difficult to take care of my other two smaller siblings as well as do the house chores, but somehow I managed and this practice made me grow as a responsible person. It also made me know how to manage my time well, which is one of the important aspects in a person’s life. Much of the social work activity involves giving care to the children living in children homes. It entails cooking for them, washing their clothes as well as the dishes, cleaning the home, and playing with the children. Not all these activities are foreign to me. I am well acquainted with them; therefore, it will be much easier for me to work in this kind of setting. My career in regards to the social mission is to acquire more skills that will enable me work around children, especially those living in the children homes. I am passionate about kids and I always take pleasure in seeing them smile. Working around kids is also interesting in that they will always make you happy. When one works around children then there is a little likelihood of the person being under stress or pressure. Children are always a source of joy. After undergoing through the experience of taking care of my own siblings at a tender age, I gradually developed the interest of working around children. The kids living in the children homes are usually filled with joy when they receive love from people. They rejoice in receiving visitors and this makes them feel like they are accepted by the society. When they left all alone, they tend to feel rejected not only by their parents, but by the society as well. This might affect their development. They may grow up feeling bitter with the world. Therefore, it is my passion to be around these kids and to encourage them at all stages of their life. I would love to mentor the children to grow and become important people in the society. The society indirectly discriminates against the poor people. More often, the people for the high social status do not like associating with the people who are not of their “class”. This is evident in some aspects of life. For instance, I witnessed one situation whereby a person who was from a rich background loved and wanted to marry a woman who was from an average family. The parents of the man did not support their son in his decision and they threatened to disown him if he went along with his intended plan. Since the man loved the woman, he went ahead a married her. His parents also kept their word and disowned him. This is kind of dispute is normal to many couples. The society has made it unacceptable for the people from different social status to mingle, thus making most rich people shun from mingling with the poor people. From this scenario, I learnt that the rich and the poor are different. With the current trend, it is almost impossible to narrow the gap. Given the educational setting, my attributes are going to be challenged in that different people have different view in regards to how people of the different social classes should interact. According to me, I think that the rich should interact freely with the poor. A rich person should not be hindered form marrying a poor one. The social statues should not be determining factors in any aspect of life. However, this will not be the view of others. Those from the rich family setup will tend to differ with my view. Most of them will say that social status contributes in many aspects in life, especially in marriage. They will challenge my view by stating that when a poor person gets married into a rich family, then he/she will have a problem to get accustomed to the way of life for the rich. They also believe that the poor person may shun from abandoning some of the activities that he/she used to undertake will growing up. Therefore, they will conclude by saying that the couple will not blend well. According to some rich people, it will be much easier for the couple to merge if they are from a similar social class, as they have many common characteristics, hence they will have few things to compromise about. It is encouraging to see how the Eastern Michigan University has been able to integrate the different divisions in the department of Human Services to contribute differently towards the mission of the social work program. This is encouraging and should be adopted by other universities. Of all the in the divisions in the department of the Human services the one that interest me most is the Matrix Human Services because it provides service to families. This division is responsible for monitoring the standard of performance, the plans outlined for the different programs, and all the policies that have been formulated for the programs. It is also in charge of overseeing that all the records are updated, conducting a follow-up of the progress of families, constantly getting in touch with the families, after recruitment, providing appropriate advice to families in enable them to formulate goals that will contribute to them being self-employed. Through influencing the families with the appropriate knowledge on how to go about planning their retirement benefits, then the families will be in a better platform to become independent and not rely on relief food. Most of the poor families become highly dependent on the government because they lack the proper knowledge of how to manage their finances well. Educating them will help them in having an open mind on the different small-scale business that they can be able to engage in to get income. In addition, they also need to be educated on how to manage their business well to get profits that will enable them to expand their business in future. The government and the Non- Profitable organizations also have a role to play by giving the people from the slums capital to start their businesses. It is through this exercise that the poor families will be transformed to more independence and this will contribute to the development of a nation. The crime rate, for instance theft, will also be reduced since most of the people who engage in those activities are usually from the poor families. Read More
