Academic Integrity Seminar Honesty among Business Leaders It is very difficult for business and ethics to go hand in hand because of the vast differences in interests and outcome. While business is concerned with making profit regardless of the situation, ethics is concerned with maintaining integrity while conducting all activities, private and public. When companies comply with internal, environmental, and national regulations, they are considered naïve. Compassion, trust, and empowerment are important features that all successful companies should adopt. This is because customers prefer dealing with a company that values ethics and implements in all the levels thoroughly. Companies that incorporate ethics in their operations end up having content employees, sensitive business policies and inspiration among affiliates. Alan Greenspan recommended hard work and integrity for any individual or group that wanted to be successful in the American economy. This notion is easily achievable and can yield the aforementioned results effectively. Self Control and the Mind Self-control involves the ability within an individual to regulate his or her own mental activity to act in a certain preferred manner. In his article Psychosynthesis, Assagioli proposed that in the absence of being unable to understand oneself, the human being lacks the necessary self-control and continues to dwell in their own errors. A major strategy in achieving greater self-control is to acknowledge the frail individual nature. Assagioli noted that people with low self-control preferred to remain weak and incompetent. The next strategy involves pre-committing oneself to tackle challenging situations. Lastly, considering that human beings are perpetually weak, awarding oneself a reward after completing each challenge involving self-control can lead to greater levels of control. Meditations of Marcus Aurelius I would like to thank my parents and immediate relatives for patiently guiding me in the right ways. They have shaped me into an upright and honest individual who is full of integrity. I have experienced the challenges of running a household having three children and appreciate the considerable effort placed by different relatives here at home and elsewhere. For several years, I have been able to attend school thanks to the assistance of my strict father and caring mother. My siblings have also guided me into a wholesome character with adequate social skills. My friends have also offered me companionship, support and more. For this, I say thank you from the deepest part of my heart. Abraham Lincoln’s Adaptation Strategies Abraham Lincoln was diagnosed with recurrent major depression, but still managed to lead the United States successfully. One of his key adaptation strategies was to learn from his suffering. Lincoln sought to use his negative experiences in life to pursue a greater cause. Instead of resorting to suicidal tendencies, he sought to channel that negative energy into developing and implementing the Emancipation Proclamation. Another adaptive strategy was the refocusing of the mind to concentrate on work and pleasure alternatively. Lincoln opted to always engage in some sort of work as idleness encouraged him to engage in negative thoughts. He also diverted negative thoughts with humor. The last adaptive measure involved learning from his failures and building on the errors, he made over the years. Replacing Happiness with Pleasure in the Declaration of Independence It is impossible to replace the meaning of “happiness” with “pleasure”. The Declaration of Independence captured the early Roman principle of happiness that included justice, courage, and moderation. The civic virtues were shared by all citizens regardless of their economic, social, and religious stature. By replacing it with pleasure, it would water down the effect to an individual level that may fail to benefit the society. Iowa Supreme Court Judges should be concerned over the origins of legal briefs by lawyers as they represent legal documents that determine the outcome of the trial. The documents can modify the meaning and intentions of the lawyer and affect the standing of a client. The punishments were right since taking official court documents lightly pointed towards incompetence and indolence on Peter Cannon’s part. In the Lane case, the lawyer had only plagiarized a small section of post-trial briefs that was limited to the sources section. This was vastly different from Cannon’s case that had a larger level of plagiarism. However, the court acted in a rash manner when handling Cannon’s case. The Florida’s requirement that personal appearances are mandatory is appropriate for such lawyers engage in malpractice and the provision of substandard services to their clients. Advice for students Students can develop on an already existing topic, but ensure that they write new and authentic material. Students can also use professional opinions, but enhance and build on them with individual ideas. Lastly, a student can make his or her own useful contributions rather depend heavily on earlier research. In the event that all these strategies fail to work, students should avoid directly copying the work of other authors and presenting it as their own. Reaction to Des Pres According to Des Pres, the human moral sense is an intricate evolution survival strategy that was developed by human beings who existed in difficult situations. In one of his articles, Des Pres discussed the driving factor behind the survival of the few Jews during the Holocaust massacres. This and other life threatening events globally have transformed and heightened the value of man’s life to an extent that even breathing air is a privilege (Des 56). Consequently, humans have reacted to life threatening situations by resorting to innate morals that preserve lives and which not need be captured in a treaty or constitution. Des Pres perceived the human moral sense as a changing element that adjusted itself based on the external controls within different environments. Human beings have evolved to learn that embracing morality results in survival for their generation. They have come to realize that pain is a bad element while pleasure is good. Using this fundamental principle, man has slowly evolved into a moral being. Definition of a good life Defining a good life is a difficult task since it involves assessing all the fundamental aspects of human existence and then categorizing them into different priorities. Therefore, what one individual considers a good life may not necessarily be “good” for other people. A good life can be defined as a collection of several aspects: experiencing satisfaction, evading negative situations, pursing self-development and contributing to the welfare of fellow human beings. However, these are not the only parameters that can be used in evaluating the quality of life. Personally, I plan to achieve a better life by first achieving self-control after which I will be able to realize success in different ventures.
