Most definitions are directly associated with love. However, romance can become a confused concept that is associated, with not only love, but obsession, passion, and lust. Because of the heightened responses to all of the emotions associated with romance, pop culture has used the concept liberally in literary work, music, and films. One might suggest that the concept has become culturally infused into almost every aspect of life as marketing has found a way to utilize romance and sexual associations to products as benign as toothpaste, or as volatile as cigarettes.

While the media has confused the culture about the nature of romance, the real experiences have valid importance in society. The courtship between two people is done with the intent of joining in marriage and procreating. As the formation of a new family hangs in the balance, romantic feelings and their resulting gestures form a foundation for the development of love, based on proof of attention, security, and valuation. Studies have been attempted to demystify the phenomenon of romance. This study will take a look at the dynamics of heterosexual romantic relationships, as the beginnings of adolescent explore their emotional and social boundaries through romantic experience, to how this concept affects adult couples as they move through the stages of their relationship.

How the presence of romance is sustained over a life-long relationship will be explored and examined, as well as real-life examples of romance within existing relationships that have endured. The study will gather information from available literature and from interviews with couples that have sustained their romantic relationships over time.
