Download file to see previous pages Social workers are required to understand the diversity of families and help individuals and families cope with the implications and impacts of learning disabilities, physical or cognitive problems. Individual treatment may be required in a safe environment and relationship in which to deal with issues. The work of the school social worker in special education is related to a diverse number of areas, in which he/ she is required to fulfill various roles and responsibilities (Turner, 2005).

Approximately one-half of school social workers are found to be practicing with elementary school children. School social workers support and help to prevent future problems by intervening with at-risk children during elementary school. The service models for school social workers working with grades 4 to 6 differ from district to district. Children in grades 4 to 6 are at the age when they are more dependent on peer opinions than on the opinions of their parents or teachers. Additionally, the differences and gaps between children with developmental delays and other children become more evident and are more difficult for teachers to deal with (Openshaw, 2008).

Students who have undiagnosed or untreated learning difficulties start falling behind and become vulnerable to the risk of not being promoted to a higher grade. The child may be unable to cope with academics because of family problems that interfere with concentration, or the reason may be a lack of appropriate skills. The social worker then determines the most appropriate referral for the child (Openshaw, 2008).

Refashioning the concept of difference is the passing of policy initiatives that aim to eliminate differences in a pluralistic society, such as the removal of bilingual education in California, Arizona, and Massachusetts. The definition of the difference is changed by the advent of inclusive education programs for students with disabilities. These trends are forcing general educators to be accountable for the first time to students with more complex forms of difference, examples being English language learners with cognitive and learning disabilities who are also members of ethnic minority groups.  ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
