The offenders as far as utilitarianism is concerned, deserve punishment, reprimand, and a high level of condemnation.
In relation to the case of Elkhart 4, the punishment was right and required for these offenders. This relates to the fact that the offenders were in the wrong place. As expected of them to be in school, the boys instead chose to break into a house and rob the Scotts (Chang, Brown & Effron 1). The punishment of the four boys has a beneficial impact on the greater society since it teaches the importance of morals such as respect for one’s property. Through the punishment of the boys, the need to have a well-functioning society devoid of disregard for other people’s property is supported. I strongly feel that the punishment on the boys is morally justified, though the sentencing of the boys may be extremely unreasonable.
