 Hurtful Behavior The life of being a first-born in most families is a challenging task for many since your parents expects you to be a role model to the other offspring and be the most understanding person among the kids. I am the first-born in a family of three children. Over the years, my parents have trained me to ensure that I rich their and my expectations by ensuring I work hard and being able to make the right decisions under any conditions. I have been an athlete since junior school where I participated in volleyball and was in the school’s team at a very young age compared to the other players. Being the youngest in the team made me open to bullying from the other stronger and older students. My dad had taught me to handle any situation and always tackle every challenge as a stepping-stone to greatness. I continued fighting to become better in the sport but in a game final against our fieriest rivals, we lost the game due to poor officiating and that was the turning point of my life.
The loss in the finals after being the better team made me decide to change my preferences from being a player to a referee to show by example to the poor referees the best way of officiating by making the right calls no matter the situation (McGrath and Hazel, 73). I studied many rules about volleyball most of my leisure time and officiated several matches in high school where there were no complaints from the players or fans. In 2013 between August and December I one of the Intramural volleyball official in the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa where most of my activities was to assist game organizer by setting court according to game policy and working alongside with other officials during games. It was hard for me to get any referee chance since the other officials were more experienced.
On 27, December was the final game, and it had been hard for me to get any chance so far and I was desperate. The chairperson came straight to me and told me that it was my chance to prove that I have the ability to be among the elite referees (McGrath and Hazel, 45). It was shocking, and I was very nervous for that opportunity but I had to be strong since it was a chance I had craved for so long. The dilemma that arose was that one of the finalist team was one I had supported since I was a kid whereas the other was a team coached by the referee who made bad calls and made my team lose back when I was a player. I was confused on whether to make the right calls or avenge by ensuring that my favorite team won. I thought about making the 50-50 decisions to go my favorite team, but my conscience could not allow me to do that since I dreamt of being the best referee no matter the situation.
In the game, I officiated as a professional making all the right calls, and my favorite team lost, but I was proud of making the right calls (McGrath and Hazel, 32). The coach of the winners congratulated me for not avenging the past and begged for forgiveness. This was the best moment that has made me a better decision maker who is ready to do what is right, no matter the situation are and never letting my personal feeling affect my profession or any other activity.
