Attention Getter: Do you ever stop to wonder how it feels to be lifeless in just a split of a second? Over speeding is among the leading cause of instant deaths on the roads
Establish Credibility: Statistics by both National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) and The United States Census Bureau (2012) indicate that over speeding is the leading cause of deaths on U.S. roads.
  • Relate to the Audience: Avoiding the temptation of over speeding will reduce the chances of losing entire families or a breadwinner to a particular family. Everybody wants to live long and die only of natural death rather than in road carnage.
  1. Preview: Today I will shed light on the dangers of speeding. I put special emphasis on why a speeding car is likely to be involved in fatal road accidents as compared to the car moving at relatively low speed.

Body

  1. Motorists who drive above the stipulated speed limits pose great social and economic risks.
  2. Social risks
  3. Loss of loved ones
  4. Families lose father and mother figures who are always the breadwinners. Teenagers may also die while over speeding.
  5. Children left to struggle through the traumatizing experience.
  6. Jail term
  7. Speeding drivers may face a jail term for ignoring traffic rules
  8. Economic risks
  9. Insurance companies
  10. The accident could fail to reach a threshold that warrants for insurance cover.
  11. The driver, if they survive the accident, may be forced to take care of the damages done to other motorists and pedestrians.
  12. Speeding ticket
  13. The speeding driver may be booked by traffic police and be forced to pay some amount before securing their release.
  14. If this goes on such a driver may have to face a jail term which may result in him or her losing income from their daily activities.

Transition: Having highlighted the results of over speeding on a person’s life, it is also important for you to understand how speeding results in accidents.

  1. Impacts of Speeding
  2. Reduces the time required by a car in motion to break safely and come to a stop.
  3. According to the force of inertia, moving objects tend to resist any to change their relative state of motion and direction.
  4. Speeding cars exert greater resistance to efforts by the driver to reduce its speed or change the direction of motion.
  5. This explains why a speeding driver has to break for a longer period as compared to that driver who is moving at a moderate speed.
  6. In the event of an emergency or obstruction of the road, the speeding driver's reaction would demand more time.
  7. Speeding results in more fatal accidents.
  8. Speeding has the effect of increasing the extent of damage both to the car and of people involved (Rajalin, 1994).
  9. The impact of a collision is greatest for objects moving at higher speeds as compared to those moving at moderate speeds.
  10. Great impact wrecks the cars, breaks windows and even crashes those inside the car.
  11. The chances of survival of any person inside the car are significantly reduced.
  12. High speeds reduce drivers control of their vehicles
  13. An object moving at very high speed becomes subject to greater external forces such that the control of the driver is significantly reduced
  14. Controlling a car at very high momentum is very difficult because the car tends to move on its own rather than the driver’s effort.
  15. The grip which the car has with the road surface reduces due to the high pressure of moving air reduces.
  16. Such cars are subjected to lift forces that reduce its firmness on the surface and thus increase its chances of toppling or losing balance.

Transition: On account of what has been discussed above, there need to be strategies to avoid over speeding.

  • Avoiding over speeding
  1. One of the surest ways of avoiding the temptation of over speeding is planning well in advance for activities to avoid last-minute rush (Steg & van Brussel, 2009).
  2. Motorists should pay special attention to the road signs, including the speed limits, which appear on the road.

Conclusion

Restating thesis: Speeding stands out as the leading cause of accidents and deaths on the roads.

Preview of main points:

  1. Many drivers deliberately chose to ignore the speed limit and drive at very high speeds oblivious of dangers associated with such driving.
  2. Speeding has the effect of reducing the time required by a car.
  • The degree of fatality is greater for a speeding car.

Call to Action: Drivers are therefore encouraged to plan their time well in advance to avoid the temptation of speeding. Also, they should pay special attention to the warning signs which appear on the roads.
