Personal and Professional Development First Successful Story After completing school, I was lucky enough to be hired as a social worker at a children’s home in my home town. I successfully followed the children’s welfare and ensured that the management provided these children with high quality environment that took into consideration the needs of these children. My responsibilities entailed talking to these children to find out their needs and determine whether the management was effectively responding to their needs. I also talked to the guardians of those children to determine the environment of the homes these children came from and what exactly prompted them to seek refuge in the orphanage. I wrote project proposals and fortunately the orphanage got donors who funded their projects that were aimed at finding ways of sustaining these children as the management did not receive constant income from their sponsors. The knowledge I acquired from school enabled me to offer efficient services to this organization. This is because I had been taught on how to work on my social interaction skills that helped me acquire information about the children. The knowledge that had been imparted on me as well helped me write good proposals that made the organization to be funded. This achievement consequently led the organization to increase my pay. Second successful story During the time that I was working at the orphanage I learnt that those children were faced with a lot of challenges especially those who went to government school. They were looked down upon and thus they were not given equal chance with their peers to participate in co-curricular activities. They therefore felt side lined and felt out of place. I initiated a project that was to introduce football tournaments between the children homes in my home town. Due to my good interactions skills that had been nurtured at school, I was able to get sponsors who funded the project thus the children homes that participated were rewarded accordingly. After conducting an evaluation test, I found that the objectives for which the project was based on had been met. The children felt that they were part of the society as they had not been left out. Therefore this made my project to be successful. First unsuccessful story During the last year my family faced a major financial crisis that had resulted from my mother being laid off from duty. There was a scandal at their company that had been caused by the seniors since they had committed a fraud. All along we had been brought up by our mother and she was our only bread winner. Being the first born in our family and having completed school a while ago, I had to look for a job in order to help my mother fend for the family since my other siblings were still in school. The road to getting a job was not that smooth for me since there was competition from others who had completed schooling and were also targeting the same employees I was targeting. Furthermore, jobs were seeking the most competent individuals to be recruited. It really took me time before I got a job and during this time I had to be patient and hopeful. This was the most trying moment in my life since my family was going through a difficult time coping up with the financial crisis. Due to my perseverance I was able to get myself a job at an orphanage at my home town. The second unsuccessful story The money that the organization received was misappropriated by the existing management. This consequently resulted to a scandal at the organization. This made the sponsors to order the management to conduct an audit. This then saw some of the management to be reshuffled and some were also laid off from work. Adjusting to the new management was a difficult task. This is because the new management presumed that we were all involved in the misappropriation of funds. They therefore harassed us and did not involve us from in the management plans. This made us feel left out discouraging us from performing effectively. Skills/Ability/Behavior/Knowledge Skills Basic Skills General Skills Job specific skills How I learnt it Through the knowledge that was imparted on me Through the practicals and field excursions that I was subjected to. Through emulating my lecturers and the experts I interacted with during the field trips Types of learning needs Individual needs Job needs Company’s /Organization’s needs How to address the learning needs Companies needs can be addresses through ensuring that one goes for the on job training so as to improve skills as per the requirement of the company Job needs can be addressed by ensuring that one possesses the right qualifications that a given job requires (Osborne & Yates, 2010). Individual needs on the other hand can be addressed through ensuring that an individual possesses the skills required and that person’s performance is competent enough (Parker, 2009). Relevance of the learning process to current studies In cases where the instructors are aware of what need the learning process entails, they will be able to deliver their students with knowledge that can help them address these needs (Osborne & Yates, 2010). Relevance of the learning process to future career The learning process equips learners with the skills to tackle real life problems once in the working field. This is because with the skills and knowledge that was passed on to them then they can apply and solve the problems arising at work (Osborne & Yates, 2010). Personal Development Plan My personal Objectives Long term objectives To develop my career in a challenging and responsible position in an organization that encourages combination and creativity To offer the vulnerable population with an opportunity to participate and strengthen their capacity Short term objectives To demonstrate proper values, knowledge and skills that are vital for good and social exercise. To utilize the general perspective as a means of building foundation for building advanced knowledge Actions that I need to undertake I need to participate in frequent training as this will help in improving my overall career thus will help me achieve my objectives. I need to participate in frequent training as this will help me improve my overall career and in turn help me achieve my objectives. I need to enhance my knowledge base in order to achieve my objectives Implementation To increase my knowledge base, I will need to interact with individuals who have experience in the same field as mine for some time so as to share with them the experiences I will also remain committed to my objectives always and work towards achieving them. Therefore I will make sure that I work hard and put extra effort so as to be successful. Reference Osborne, E. & Yates, S., 2010. Personal Development,Diversity and Values. Clayton: Blake Education .
