In the United s, hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, and ice cream have long been considered national favorites. What cultural patterns helpexplain the love of these kinds of foods? Sporting events led to many fast food being served. Hot dogs, fries, hamburgers, and even ice cream can be bought across the country at sporting events, movies, and fairs. Most of American foods were borrowed from countries where the immigrants came from. Although the ‘pure’ versions of these made it across the ocean or into America, due to local tastes different versions formed to create the dishes of cultural American today.
The food evolved into become classic American. 2. Do you think that a global culture is emerging? Do you regard the prospect of a global culture as positive or negative? Why? Yes, global culture is emerging. I regard the prospect as positive. With a global culture more countries have opportunities for economical success. It also helps individuals experience different cultures and broaden their horizons. It does not mean that one should lose their culture, but appreciate other cultures. 3. How would Marx, Weber, and Durkheim imagine U.S. society a century from now?
What kinds of questions or concerns would each thinker have? Each would probably feel that the U.S. society would collapse due to the different cultures mixed together. Marx felt the Capitalism would fall a long time ago. Weber would feel that because the United States has differing opinions that it would fall, as would Durkheim. What each individual did not take into account was the American system is not rigid. It is flexible to change, so if something does not work the citizens can change it.
The American culture grows and reinvents itself everyday. That is why it has lasted so long. 4. Link Marx, Weber, and Durkheim to one of sociology's theoretical approaches, and explain your choices. Marx had a Conflict Theory. He believed that the workers would turn on the richer class in the capitalist society. Marx thought the poor people would revolt against the rich people. What he did not take into account is everybody has a fair chance to become rich, so the poor does not focus on the rich, but how to get rich.
Durkheim used Functionalism. He believed that a society was a single essence. The society was driven on differences and similarities. The society can be more than just a single part, but the single parts make up the whole. Once again Durkheim thought America would collapse upon itself because of too many different parts. That is what makes it work though. Max Weber had the Interpretive Theory. He believed societies worked through intentional and unintentional actions. Weber thought that the interaction in America had too much conflict.
