Three Pillars of Academia - Essay Example

Every profile offers information about the differences and similarities in these three academic careers. The three pillars of academia are teaching, research, and service, and an appropriate balance of these three pillars is imperative for success in the world of academia. What appalls me most about this career is that it allows someone to act as a mentor and teach students, maintain a practice site and work as a pharmacist as well as taking part in the research. Having such a wide range of responsibilities or opportunities is unique to academia.

The three pillars of academia are briefly outlined below. i) Research – This pillar comprises scholarship, publications, and poster presentations. A career in academia allows pharmacists to carry out researches, and work at the cutting edge of pharmaceutical science. Every moment, pharmacists working in academia across basic as well as applied sciences should balance their joy of exploration and discovery with other vital roles. These include scholarships, publishing papers, appearing at significant meetings or conferences, motivating young individuals through their teaching, and even external examining. ii) Teaching – This is basically presenting lectures and serving as a preceptor.

The development of the teaching and learning approach is founded on student-centered learning as well as e-learning. Pharmacists can implement regular workshops in relation to developing and finding a practical solution for the industries and people. Again, open education E-learning can be offered for students who have limited access to educational facilities more so for basic applied sciences. iii) Service - This pillar involves offering services at a practice site as well as leadership and professional involvement at the university, college of pharmacy, and the profession as a whole.

It also involves developing a dedication to the individual which is aimed to contribute to the resolution of challenges facing our nation.  This pillar enables pharmacists to be directly involved in society by contributing to the resolution of State matters and challenges, especially at the local level.
