Speech Informative Speech # 02 Childhood Obesity If we take a look around ourselves, we will get to know that every third child aged between 2 to 19 years is suffering from obesity. The numbers are increasing every day and have almost tripled in the past three decades. Because of this reason, many doctors have claimed obesity as the new American epidemic. If you still do not believe in these facts then, you need to look around the next time to visit the mall or grocery store. Analyzing the jump in this disease, I would like to speak about childhood obesity. Childhood obesity that is growing with a rapid pace has become a serious challenge for children, as well as adults. According to Martica Heaner, in her article ‘America, 100 percent Fat’ she wrote that the present American generation of children is likely to die (Heaner). It is because of the childhood obesity that an increase in the children waistlines is also observed at an enormous speed. There are certain factors that contribute towards the issue. The major factor for childhood obesity and its rapid growth in the present generation is eating too much of junk food and lack of exercise and work out (Lucas 45). It should be noted that obesity is an abnormal growth of body fat that has the negative impact on the overall health (Heaner 3). The growing customs of eating junk and fast food rather than adopting for fresh and healthy meals at home is one major factor that is contributing towards child obesity. Children are now eating food that is adding to their daily fat consumptions and are of poor quality (Heaner; Lucas). The fast food culture has gained acceptance because of convenience and quickness in industrialized countries. It has been studied that 49% of parents answered that due to lack of time they take their children to restaurants rather than preparing healthy meals at home. The restaurant meals are not healthy at all as they have chemicals and do not include sufficient fruits and vegetables (Lucas 56). Unsurprisingly, fast food is full of fat, refined sugar and sodium. All these components are bad for child’s health. According to a CBS report one-third of children (approximately) in America that are aged between 4 and 19, eat fast food. It is understood that junk food has its side effects and has contributed a lot towards child obesity and weight gain. As a matter of fact that consumption of fast food could not harm in the same manner if proper workout schedule is followed (Heaner; Lucas). I would like to inform you all that little or no exercise also contributes towards child obesity. Doctors have also claimed it as one of the main culprits of childhood obesity. Unsurprisingly technology has taken over our societies in every sector. The present generation does not walk, run, or bother to go the park to work out or play (Heaner; Lucas). They spend most of their time in front of their TV sets playing games or watching films and cartoons. It has led to extra padding on the bodies of numerous children. As you all know that children consume more calories than they disburse. When they do not workout then weight gain occurs (Lucas). In conclusion, I would like to highlight that childhood obesity is a growing issue which is increasing day by day and is affecting children of the present generation. Although there are certain reasons for childhood obesity, the major ones are simply eating junk / fast food and lack of exercise or work out (Heaner two; Lucas). Furthermore, I would like to highlight that the role of parents in this regard is also very important as they should also realize that their children’s life is at stake, and they should focus on planning a healthy lifestyle for them that includes healthy meals and workout schedules. Through such small measures, we can surely counter the growing epidemic in an effective manner. Persuasive Speech # 03 Evolution and Creationism We are all aware of the fact that there are two schools of thoughts regarding the presence of human life in this world i.e. either by evolution or God has created them long time back (Scott; Moore, Decker and Cotner 123). Numerous controversies over this topic are witnessed as the teaching of evolution in the country is largely politicized in the United States (Lucas; Moore, Decker and Cotner). Since the topic is of considerate importance, therefore, I would like to conduct a speech on the subject that God created man and that the subject of creationism should be taught in schools. As a Christian, I believe that it is clearly mentioned in Bible that we are all sons and daughters of Adam, and Eve and that man was first created almost some ten millennia ago. According to a survey that was conducted on a general sample in the United States, it was revealed that as many 55 % of Americans believe that they believe God has created man (Moore, Decker and Cotner). The other school of thought that is just opposite to this one believes that humans evolved. It is the scientific community that accepts the theory of evolution and biological diversity. However, majority of scientists and scientific societies around the globe have rejected the intelligent design (Moore, Decker and Cotner; Scott 98). It should be noted that the idea of evolution is in direct conflict with evolution and we as Christian humans should try to understand that it is against our religious beliefs. Therefore, we should consider something that is in conflict with our religious teachings (Moore, Decker and Cotner). Furthermore, as most of the scientists and philosophers are evolutionists therefore they have tried their best to incorporate its teachings in classrooms. It should be noted that the teachings that are in conflict with that of creationism will endanger the learning chain of creationism. Thus, the present generation will never be able to realize what it is about (Moore, Decker and Cotner 143; Scott). Undoubtedly there are numerous scientific theories and models that support the concept of evolution, however, as a Christian I have faith in the concept of creationism and that God created human as it is mentioned in the Bible (Moore, Decker and Cotner). Obviously, everyone has their views and perspectives regarding evolution and creationism. It should be taught in school or not but the fact that the both are in conflict with each other is a serious issue that needs an immediate solution (Moore, Decker and Cotner; Scott). I am not saying that process of evolution is false, it might be correct, but according to my religion and my teachings God has created human beings from the beginning (Moore, Decker and Cotner). Teaching one concept (i.e. of evolution) in the classroom would put an end to the concept of creationism, and the present generation would know nothing about it as they will only be taught about evolution and how human evolved over time. For this reason, many fundamentalist Christians think that creationism is now at stake. Again, it should be noted that within creationism; there are different kinds of people who are all different from each other (Scott; Moore, Decker and Cotner). For example, the most famous creationist, Ken Ham, who is also the President of Answers in Genesis (AiG) believes that undoubtedly God has created the universe and mankind, he created it in such a manner that it is an orchard of life where everything is in a systematic manner. For example, he created everything and every number of animal and its kind and in a manner that it keeps on changing and transforming with time (Moore, Decker and Cotner; Scott 111). As Christians, we all should realize that God has created us, and he is the one who is running this entire universe (Scott; Moore, Decker and Cotner). The teachings of evolution in classrooms must not be completely diminished however the court’s decision against the teaching of creationism in classroom is not a good move as creationism should also be taught to the present generation and in classrooms so that one can easily recognize and differentiate between which one is right and which one is wrong. After deciding wisely, he may choose the closest one to practice and follow (Scott 76; Moore, Decker and Cotner). Beliefs are formed overtime. A child who is taught about a certain lesson from the beginning remembers it for the rest of his life. However, if he is not taught about certain thing then there are greater chances that he might never know what is the concept all about (Moore, Decker and Cotner; Scott). Therefore, creationism should be taught in classrooms alongside evolution and both the subjects must be explained in a very neutral manner. It can be said that it completely depends upon the one being taught, which one to chose and which one to not. As Christians, we all should believe in creationism as we have Bible as an evident proof that has clearly mentioned that God created mankind and this entire universe. Works Cited Heaner, Martica.
