There are four fundamental sorts of iconographic representations of the cross: the crux quadrata, or Greek cross, with four equivalent arms; the crux missa, or Latin cross, whose base stem is longer than the other three arms; the crux commissa, as the Greek letter tau, now and then called St. Anthony's cross; and crux decussata, named from the Roman discusses, or image of the numeral 10, otherwise called St. Andrew's cross. Customs supports the crux missa as that on which Christ kicked the bucket, however, some accept that it was a crux commissa. The numerous varieties and ornamentations of the processional, sacrificial table, and heraldic crosses, of cut and painted crosses in holy places, cemeteries, and somewhere else, are improvements of these four sorts.
