A Narrative of My Strengths and Weaknesses - Essay Example

While some people are good at handling their weaknesses and exploring their abilities, others often tend to hide their weaknesses as they fear the possibility of getting ridiculed by others for being weak. In fact, I belonged to this category of people who dislike revealing their weaknesses. However, now I know that it is important to address this issue to be successful in life. One’s strengths are often some talents and hobbies, knowing which helps one to utilize the same for personal success and to help others.

Therefore, I write a narrative of my strengths and weaknesses. As I approached the issue of weaknesses with an open mind and in-depth, I realized that my weaknesses revolve around my education. Out of them, one that seriously impacts my learning is my poor writing skills, especially in English. It is true that I try to avoid writing as much as possible because I have a difficult time constructing the right sentences in English. The reason for this is that English is my second language, and I have a fear of this language.

Though I tried many ways, including grammar classes, my embarrassment in revealing the reality prevented me from approaching the issue effectively. As a result of this weakness, I often received poor grades in my writing. It further worsened the problem as I had to spend too much time writing and rewriting my essays. Despite all the efforts, my papers remained poor in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and organization, only to increase my fear. The second in my list of weaknesses is my lack of confidence.

It has had a serious impact on my life and education since the very beginning of my life. Even from the very beginning of my school days, I felt highly embarrassed speaking in public and performing in front of a crowd. It has huge repercussions. Therefore, though I am a good singer, I never sang a song in public, reducing myself to a bathroom singer. Similarly, though I really liked dancing, I felt embarrassed about taking part in dance competitions. I still remember a time when I had to make a presentation in my class.

I had a difficult time facing the audience, and I had butterflies in my belly. I started trembling, sweating, and I could not complete the presentation. Therefore, I now feel that this weakness is the most powerful one, dampening my performance in all areas of life.  However, my life is not all boring or full of issues. One of my strengths is the ability to take care of kids. I am employed in a preschool because of this ability, and I have remarkable success with kids for many years now with the help of this ability.

The institution finds my presence very useful because the kids are happy in my presence. I feel immense satisfaction when I notice that those kids like my presence, and I am happy to be a role model for them. When other teachers find it difficult to understand the kids, I quickly communicate with them and easily understand their needs, issues, and demands. Out of all my strengths, one that is worth mentioning is my ability to stay organized. In my personal life, I always keep things organized and never face any problem locating things.

Moreover, I do not even remember any such situation when I lost a thing due to carelessness. Therefore, even my friends and family members appreciate the way I keep my personal room and belongings organized. The ability to organize is not limited to my personal room and things. I can organize bigger things like group assignments. When there is a group assignment to do, my team members ask me to plan and organize things because they have realized that I am a great planner. In my education, this organized approach enables me to earn better grades and more motivation.

I know very well that this strength will help me in my professional life because the organization is a much sought-after skill in people in the field of employment. Finally, there is the ability to listen to others that is worth mentioning. Though I know that I lack many other strengths, for this strength, my classmates and friends often come to me when they need to share any issues and consider me as a reliable shoulder to lean on. In this world that is getting increasingly complex and fast, this is a quality that is valuable and worth nourishing in people.

I know that these weaknesses and strengths are a part of me as a person, and I need to address them in the right way to lead a fulfilling life. Openly admitting my inability to the language will help me find better resources and help in solving my language issues. So, instead of ignoring and suppressing the issue, I have decided to come out and seek solutions. Overcoming this feeling of embarrassment is the way to gain confidence so that I can exhibit my skills in public. In fact, I have found a career where my strengths, namely taking care of kids and organization strengths, are very useful.

My ability to listen to others has become another important feature that helps me better deal with the kids in the preschool. I have decided to spend the coming days, improving the areas where I have weaknesses and excel in the areas where I have strengths.
