Rogerian and Maslowian Theories - Case Study Example

Maslowian theory of the hierarchy of needs was developed in 1943 and is commonly referred to as “The Theory of Human Motivation.” In tandem with the theory, Maslow pointed out various needs that individual’s desire in their lives in order to feel satisfied and live appropriately within their society. The key aspects pointed out by Maslow include physiological needs, safety needs, need for belonging, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. According to Tudor & Keith (2005), these needs are arranged in order depending on their urgency in human life.

Janine, aged 34 suffers from abandonment by her partners in marriage and also suffers financial difficulties that make her life extremely difficult. She suffers the problem of intimate relationships whereby she ends up as the victim of abandonment at each instance (Cain et al. pg 56). From the outset, it can be noted that she extremely suffers in living her life and she needs someone to hold to and gain financial support for improved and relieved living. The financial difficulties also make it hard for her to hire baby sitters for her two children aged 6 and 8 after being abandoned by her partners in marriage.

The frustrations in her life are also exhibited in the understanding that she has been left by two partners and has children from each of these partners (Palmer & Helen pg. 77). Janine, aged 34 came to visit me and she appeared extremely disappointed in herself. Apparently, she was suffering from both emotional and financial difficulties that had come into place because of the relationship breakages she has suffered. However, she tries to avoid this situation but she constantly finds herself in the opposition despite her desire to lead a happy and fulfilling life in terms of relationships and financial security (Wilkins, pg.78). In line with the enormous experience that I have gathered from the field of counseling, I was quick to ask her concerning how she wanted to feel, how it will help her, and the expectations she had after the post-therapy.

Firstly, Janine was quick to point out that she was in need of happiness and self-satisfaction. She does not want to find herself in a lonely status, but she falls back into the situation because of her difficulty in forgetting the situations she has undergone. For example, she naturally finds herself stressed and lonely any time she thinks of her former partners and the manner in which they abandoned her. She feels she has lost love completely. More so, she was of the opinion that she needed financial security as a mother to take care of her children who were still young and unable to take care of themselves.

Her children are aged, 6, 8, and 15 years and she feels that she needs to take care of them as a mother. according to De, Brouwer & Maslowian (pg. 77) they will feel motherly love in cases where Janine herself is able to support them even after the abandonments she had experienced from her two past intimate relationships. Her post-therapy expectations were that she wanted to just achieve a happy life that would enable her overcome the constant emotional and financial stresses that she was suffering in her life.

She believes positivity and self-confidence are the key aspects that would boost her realization of the desired aspects hence achieving the required goals in her life. Therapy would enable her reach her desired goals with the required level of positivity and confidence in her life. The Problem Janine is a 34 year old woman with three children all of whom are girls. The children include Josie 15, Heidi 8, and Caroline 6. Janine is not comfortable with herself as she feels abandoned, unwanted, and unloved by members of society.

The pay off from the intimate relationships she had entered was ultimate disappointment and frustration at all times. This makes it difficult for her to lead the life she had desired from her childhood times. The pay off of the intimate relationships that she had got into is a broken heart and financial difficulties after the abandonment (Wilkins, pg.78). She is left with the responsibility to take care of her children and it is clear that she does not have a constant source of incoming. According to Janine, trusting people has become difficult because of the state in which they have left her.

She has particularly developed a negative attitude toward men whom she feels have contributed enormously to the tribulations that she has been required to face in her life. She believes that most individuals that have come into her life are unthankful as they are not there to support her when she needs them most as she undergoes financial difficulties. Notably, Janine is a 2 personality person on the Enneagram meaning she is a helper. In order to help and support her children, she requires financial support and love that have disappeared from individuals that she least expected.

The pay off from her relationships appears to be financial difficulties that have been extremely stressing her all through since the breakages from her marriages and the burden of bringing up young children without adequate finances. Again, she has a feeling of guilt where she tends to think that she is the cause of the breakages. It is not normal for an individual to be abandoned by almost two individuals in different circumstances if he/she has not contributed to the abandonment. The guilt also emanates from the self-pity that she has developed toward herself and her life is extremely in a mix of many problems that she did not expect (Cain et al. pg 56). The entire pay off from her relations is extremely frustrating.

Men in Janine’s Life and Their Aggressive Nature Janine met Jose when she was 16 years and he was 18. She developed enormous love form him. The love was founded on Janine’s feeling that Jose cared about her and was ready to take care of her in her entire life. His focus on a bright future played a contributory role in ensuring that he related well with Janine who was also a caring lady. As can be seen, Jose is 7 on the Enneagram implying that he is an outgoing individual who loves his life and enjoys it to the fullest without any form of denial (Palmer & Helen pg. 77).
