Introduction Self-assessment can be described as the procedure a person evaluates himself/herself with a motive of examining the aspects which are significant to one' identity as well as those which are not important. The process of self-assessment prompt individuals to look for information to ascertain their indeterminate self-concept rather than their assured self-concept (Drucker and Hesselbein, 2013 ). Further, self-assessment is adopted to improve people’s certainty of their distinct self-knowledge. Skills are defined as learned abilities and behaviors (Drucker and Hesselbein, 2013 ). There exist numerous diverse kinds of skills which are significant to people in various phases of their lives. While practicing my career, I have been able to conduct a thorough evaluation of myself concerning my skills. I have been in a position to recognize my strengths, weaknesses and the areas I need to improve on. In this piece of work, I will present my personal skills strengths and weaknesses as well as formulate an individual improvement plan. Personal skills strengths Comprehending individual skills strengths is an advantageous move. It enables a person to center attention his or her determinations to understanding their strongest skills and thus take advantage of them. As a friendly individual, there are several areas that I feel are most developed for me. The ability to listen to others and speak to them in a clear manner. For example, when conversing with my colleagues, I always try my best to equalize my participation because I believe that good communication should involve a two-way flow of dialogue. This is important for dyadic communication. Another area that’s well-developed is my ability to maintain eye contact while conversing with someone in my place of work because I believe it is important for building rapport, as well as it demonstrates my good self-confidence. I can also interpret non-verbal cues at ease, and this is one of my strengths that have made me a good team player in my workplace. Recently, at my place of work, I was assigned a project by my supervisor who also instructed me to have it done before the following day by 10 am. Unfortunately, at that moment I was held up in another task which was delegated to me by the HR via email. I stood up, looked my supervisor direct in his eyes and explained to him that I was doing another task and could not manage to complete his task by 10 am the following day. I stood up because the supervisor was speaking from the door of the office and there were obstacles on the way to let him see me while speaking. Due to my self-confidence skill and the ability to maintain eye contact with my supervisor, he reassigned that work to another employee. I am also an innovative person while at work. In most scenarios, I am able to provide a solution to my colleagues and my leaders at work. Further, based on my experiences in work, I am able to create a clear vision of my career and for the organization. With this regard, I possess the skill to welcome change in the organization. Establishing a clear vision goes beyond offering a picture of the desired future. It sparks the hunger to see the implementation of the intended change. My past leaders have been sharing their vision for organizational change with me by continually communicating the change vision. This has played a major role in empowering me to link my day-to-day actions and decisions to the vision for change. This is actually one of the most important things that I have been doing differently in order to be more proactive to change. For instance, I was one of the advocates to transformation on how my organization keeps and maintains its data. After doing my research over the internet, I realized that it is important for the organization to adopt modern techniques of keeping and maintaining data. I proposed the implementation of Big Data analytics as the approach of maintaining the firm's data. Following further discussions and liaisons, the firm's administrators found it important to adopt the Big Data analytics technology. Appropriate keeping and maintenance of information is advantageous. It enables the firm to keep and preserve its confidential data. Personal Skill Weaknesses According to Kreps (2011), with regard to strategic organizational communication purposes, extroverts must gauge the demands of different organizational situations so as to determine how extroverted they need to be. However, I believe that this is an important area in my organizational communication skills that need the most improvement. In fact, my extroversion has landed me in trouble a couple of times, for instance, most people consider me to be disruptive in situations that require everyone to act in a reserved manner. I have realized that I need to learn to control my levels of extroversion because it is one of the important areas for my organizational communication skills as an extrovert. I was not aware of this weakness before conducting this self-assessment. I have realized the need to improve on my teamwork skills. Due to the nature of my daily routine, most of the times, I work on my own. After work delegation from my supervisor and other seniors in the organization, I normally settle in my workstation and complete the work silently. While stuck into a problem, I usually utilize the internet to find solutions. Most of the times, I succeed. But, I take this a personal skill weakness since back in my mind I am aware that organizational teamwork is important for the growth of the firm. It is during deliberations and discussions in work that a good organizational culture is created. This behavior of working alone and avoiding teamwork developed in me back in high school. I used to conduct research when I am stuck into academic problems as opposed to liaising with my fellow students and with my tutors. Thus, I knew about this weakness before the assessment. If I continue this way, lack of teamwork spirit will harm my career at one point. I expect assignments and fieldworks in the workplace which will require collaborations and teamwork. Then, I need to learn how to possess teamwork skill. Personal Improvement Plan To enable organizational acculturation to take place, I have realized that I need to negotiate shared understandings with my colleagues, especially those from diverse backgrounds founded on diverse beliefs, values, and attitudes. This improvement with helps me achieve my career goals of collaboration and teamwork. By developing the organizational communication skill, my ability to work with others will definitely improve. I plan to engage my colleagues, supervisor and other seniors in my workplace so as to fully develop the teamwork skill. For the new employees, I plan to advocate for the adoption of on-the-job training approach which will accelerate my teamwork skills with the new workers. Conclusion Self-assessment is the practice an individual appraises himself/herself with an object of scrutinizing the features which are significant to one’ uniqueness as well as those which are not essential. I strongly possess good listening skills and innovative skills. On the other hand, I am weak in teamwork and organizational communication abilities. I plan to improve on these two weaknesses by understanding and engaging my colleagues in work. As a friendly person, this will improve my career objective of teamwork and collaboration. Read More
