Comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessment Total Number of Words 511 Aim: This report aims to conduct a comprehensive functional behavior assessment on how to effectively increase gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week. Objective: To be able to apply the best and most appropriate method when conducting a comprehensive functional behavior assessment. Method: Self-observation method will be used when conducting the comprehensive functional behavior assessment. Before writing down the summary of the functional analysis and the behavioral plan, the self-observation method will be conducted together with a target gym schedule checklist and the antecedent, behavior, and consequences (ABC) assessment form. Assessment Results: Learning more about physical, mental and emotional benefits of undergoing a regular 30-minute exercise each day from various You Tube videos has been very effective in terms of increasing my motivation and attendance at the gym. Instead of attending the gym between 1 to 2 times each week, increase in motivation made it possible for the subject to increase his gym attendance up to 7 days during the first week (starting from September 26, 2014 to October 2, 2014) and 5 days during the second week (starting from October 3, 2014 to October 6, 2014). Conclusion: Positive motivation can trigger the development of positive changes in the desired behavior. In the absence of a strong positive motivational intervention, the subject will not be able to show signs of improvements in his target gym attendance Methods Used To conduct a comprehensive functional behavior assessment on how to effectively increase gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week, performing a functional interview is very common (Matson, 2012, 121). However, conducting an interview in this particular comprehensive functional behavior assessment is not appropriate in this report. The main reason for skipping the functional interview process is because a self functional analysis was being conducted in this report. The hypotheses that will be tested in this report are as follows: H0 = Motivational intervention used in this case will not help me increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week; and H1 = Motivational intervention used in this case will help me increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week. It is best not to include the use of a functional assessment interview when testing the research hypotheses. Instead of conducting a functional assessment interview, self or direct observation method will be used when conducting the comprehensive functional behavior assessment. Often times, direct observation methods used in a comprehensive functional behavior assessment can come in a form of recording specific events like attending the gym (Matson, 2012, 121). Before writing down the summary of the functional analysis and the behavioral plan, the self-observation method will be conducted together with a target gym schedule checklist and the antecedent, behavior, and consequences (ABC) assessment form is more appropriate. (See Table I – Target Gym Schedule/Attendance Checklist on page 4) Table I – Target Gym Schedule/Attendance Checklist Week Day Time and Date Attended the Gym Total No. of Days Attended the Gym Each Week 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 For a few days now, I have been watching several videos about the importance of regular exercises in terms of improving each person’s endurance in sports activities (You Tube, 2012a). In fact, exercises can help improve not only speed but also maintain the normal body weight, strength, flexibility, stamina and agility (You Tube, 2012b, 2012c). After deciding on the need to increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week, I purposely created a target gym schedule checklist presented above to help me track down the number of days and time I spent on the gym. Basically, the checklist will also remind me of the need to regain back my desire and enthusiasm to spend at least a few minutes on the gym each day. In general, performing the antecedent, behavior, and consequences (ABC) assessment procedure is also necessary to help me examine all factors that can positively or negatively affect my long-term desire to spend more time at the gym. Using the ABC assessment tool in analyzing my own personal behavior about the allocation of time at the gym, it will be much easier for me to develop more effective ways of controlling my desired behavior. Assessment Results Learning more about physical, mental and emotional benefits of undergoing a regular 30-minute exercise each day from various You Tube videos has been very effective in terms of increasing my motivation and attendance at the gym. Ever since I started viewing some of the You Tube videos online, I was able to feed the brain some information about the need to give more importance about spending at least 30-minutes of exercising each day. Instead of spending 90% of my time at work, in school, and with my family members, I managed to allocate at least one (1) hour for myself. Basically, the one (1) hour I purposely allocated for myself is just enough for me to go back and forth the gym and at the same time enjoy my 30-minute routine exercise each day. Considering what has happened few weeks ago, I write down the ABC assessment as follows: Antecedent(s) --------------------- Behavior------------------------- Consequences Feeding positive information about the health, cognitive, and emotional benefits of exercising by watching you tube videos. Increased my desire to spend at least 30-minutes at the gym each day. Managed to increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week; Improve my ability to manage time with work, school and family; Feel so much better about myself. Looking at the gym schedule/attendance checklist below, noticed that during the first week (September 26, 2014 to October 2, 2014), I was able to attend the gym for seven (7) days. The perfect attendance shown on the gym attendance checklist clearly shows that the behavioral motivation strategy used in motivating myself to increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week has been very effective. On the second week (October 3, 2014 to October 6, 2014), I only had 5 days gym attendance because of some very personal issues that happened at home. Even though I was not able to attend the gym for two (2) consecutive days, the fact that I still managed to visit the gym on October 5 and October 6 is a good sign that I have not totally lost my personal will to be at the gym at least once a day. (See Table II – Target Gym Schedule/Attendance Checklist below) Table II – Target Gym Schedule/Attendance Checklist Week Day Time and Date Attended the Gym Total No. of Days Attended the Gym Each Week 1 1 September 26, 2014 (5:30 pm) 7 days 2 September 27, 2014 (4:30 pm) 3 September 28, 2014 (1:30 pm) 4 September 29, 2014 (5:33 pm) 5 September 30, 2014 (4:45 pm) 6 October 1, 2014 (4:50 pm) 7 October 2, 2014 (6:50 pm) 2 1 October 3, 2014 (5:12 pm) 5 days 2 October 1, 2014 (4:50 pm) 3 October 2, 2014 (6:10 pm) 4 - 5 - 6 October 5, 2014 (4:40 pm) 7 October 6, 2014 (5:20 pm) Considering the results of the comprehensive functional behavior assessment, it is safe to conclude that H0 which assumes that motivational intervention used in this situation will not help me increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week should be rejected. On the contrary, H1 which assumes that the motivational intervention used in this case will help me increase my gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week should be accepted. Conclusion The primary factor that influence positive change in gym attendance is the presence of motivational words received from the You Tube videos. It simply means that positive motivation can lead to positive changes in terms of the desired behavior. In the absence of a strong positive motivational intervention, it is possible that the subject will not be able to show signs of improvements in his target gym attendance. Based on this functional behavior assessment exercise, I have learned that people should be able to identify first their desired behavior before searching for appropriate intervention that can positively affect their desired behavioral changes. Often times, appropriate intervention should be in a form of different positive ideas or thoughts. Basically, positive influences coming from the outside sources can somehow affect people’s desire and motivation to meet their desired behavioral changes. All these explains why it was possible for the subject to increase his gym attendance from 1 to 2 times each week up to at least 6 times each week. References Matson, J. (2012).
