CHAPTER INTRODUCTION This chapter is the opening chapter of the dissertation. It will outline the main essence and fundamental importance of the study. The chapter will commence by examining the issue of a social problem and from there, there will be an insight into how it can be structured and streamlined in order to give way for a formal research. Through this, a deduction of the aims and objectives of the research will be done and this will lead to the formulation of the motivations for the research as well the research outline. Background of Study People typically seek to help each other in various ways and manner. It is apparent that most people try to help each other for various reasons. Others choose to help other people for absolutely no reason. There seem to be some kind of instincts in people that prompts and incites helping behaviours in individual as well as group settings. There are situations and times when people help others more than others. There are times when we are motivated to do good deeds by way of our religious or personal individual beliefs (Forbes & Zampelli, 2014). This informs a person’s views on what is right and what is wrong and motivates a person to do things either willingly or through various motivations that guide their conduct. Other authorities indicate that there is a variation across gender lines, this is because the two genders have different reactions and different attitudes towards helping people. This is due to various trends and processes relating to the genders of people and how they handle things in the normal sense of affairs. Another variable that has prominence in analysis and reviews of helping behaviours is the priming condition and its issues. This is because the atmosphere within which a person finds himself or herself informs the extent to which he is willing to go in helping other people and assisting people in various ways and manner. Research Problem Priming refers to the situation and condition, where emotions reaches its highest level and the two parties sharing the love experience the most extreme version of the emotions being shared mutually (Breckler, Olson, & Wiggins, 2012; Crisp & Turner, 2012). If this is the highest point within which people in a relationship might feel, then there is the possibility of investigating and analysing how individual members of the relationship interact with each other and how they help each other in these situations and contexts. Thus, this research will try to ascertain the main elements and aspects of the different genders and how they behave in priming situations in relation to helping behaviours. The study will examine which of the genders behave in which ways and manners. For instance, there is a question of which gender is moved by these priming situations. This is because most scholars assert that love priming comes with situations like kind words and situations where the environment is conducive and appropriate for sharing love and emotions which leads to helping behaviours (Eagley & Crowley, 1986). This also leads to various helping behaviours that are inherently expressed as part of the love and the relationship (Fisher-Lokou, Lamy, & Gueguen, 2009). Therefore, the second issue is about what happens to helping relationships and assistance in situations where there is love priming. Which gender is more likely to volunteer or help the other genders? Which gender might want to donate resources to the other in times of love priming? Are males more likely to do so than females? These form the essence and the main crux of the research and the study that will be conducted in this research. Society is set up to have women as the givers of help due to the fact that they are seen to be nurturing and more caring in their outlook (Eagley & Crowley, 1986). Women are also the main receivers of help in society since they are seen to be the weaker sex in most patriarchal societies (Fisher-Lokou, Lamy, & Gueguen, 2009). There is a question of whether gender patterns are prone in social interactions during priming periods or not. Finally, there is the question of how differently couples behave during love priming situations and in neutral situations. Do couples behave and treat each other in the same manner before and after love priming situations? And what are the gender dynamics in this situation and context? This research will set out to address these issues and provide insights into them. Aims and Objectives The aim of the research is to examine the role of gender in priming relationships and affairs and the provision of help in various situations and contexts. In order to attain this end, the following objectives will be explored: 1. An evaluation of the relationship between gender and the giving of help in couple relationships; 2. An analysis of the linkage between gender and the receiving of help in relationships; 3. An assessment of the relationship between priming emotional situations and prosocial behaviours; 4. A comparative assessment of the provision of help and support in love priming situations and a contrast with neutral situations. Motivation for Research This research is meant to provide an observation of a significant and important aspect of the life of couples. Thus, the research will employ various tools in conventional social science and psychology in order to deduce an important trend of the culture and practice of people in romantic relationships. This can help to create an understanding of the different genders and also assist in promoting social harmony through the creation of meaningful relationships. This research is in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the writers’ undergraduate studies with the James Cook University, Singapore. This is an essential part of the graduation requirements. Hence, the researchers will seek to utilise important concepts and ideas in the taught course in order to provide a deliverable that seeks to utilise the most important and the most significant theories for a practical purpose. Chapter Outline This research is conducted over six chapters. This chapter is the opening chapter and it outlines the main elements of the study and its procedures. The next chapter is a critical review of literature and it brings out important ideas and findings that show aspects of previous research conducted in the field of the social sciences that is relevant to the dissertation. Chapter 3 will be a presentation of a research methodology whilst the next chapter, will present the findings of the fieldwork conducted under the methodology. Chapter 5 will involve discussions into the main aspects of the research whilst the last chapter will present the theories and concepts deduced from the whole research. Read More
