Out of the shadow reflection affiliation The film out of Shadow by Susan Smiley is a proactive and courageous one. Apart from schizophrenia, Mildred her mother is diagnosed to have been suffering from debilitating mental illness. The mental illness was diagnosed right before schizophrenia when she attempted to commit suicide and screaming or sleeping tendencies. The film has great significance through insightful and educational measures about frustrating schizophrenia. It also provides insight to the psychiatrist, case manager, social workers and families.

More so it has been a critical tool used by advocacy organization such as NAMI and MHA to raise public awareness about mental illness. Lastly, it lay out the medical establishment treatment methods regarding this disorder. (Smiley et al, 2006) The social and psychological factors interaction in this film establishes the educational theme on how to leave with such people. It is difficult to understand patient with schizophrenia disorder. The caregivers to these must be informed about patient’s behaviors so as to avoid dangerous incidences of suicide.

In addition, the personality theme also be considered. The producer focus on her personality ideal to take care of her mother and taking charge of the family matters. As a kid, it is stressing for one to be living with screaming guardian. It shows the process of nature and nurture interaction towards behaviors of a child. Health was another theme the producer explored. Schizophrenia patients behave in unhealthy way towards others. The patients are diagnosed with delusion and hallucination symptoms.

They also lack the sense of the reality. Thus as caregivers we should embrace treatment measures especially as early as possible to reduce such incidences. (Smiley et al, 2006) My personal reflection on this movie is the insightful awareness about schizophrenia. I therefore, should assist and educate people on how to care for victims suffering from mental illness as well as equipping them with the preventive know-how about the severe mental illness.
