The study is based on the ground that parenting may be an important influence in the development of narcissism in society. Many previous studies have been concentrating on westernized industrialized cultures. This study is focused particularly on the role of recalled parenting and attachment styles in the differences in NPI in two different cultures. Parenting styles are likely to account for the generation's decline in empathy while narcissism is on the increase. They thus used two female student populations as samples of study i.e. one from the UK and the other one from the UAE.

In terms of method, the study involved 70 student women from the UAE and 78 from the UK. These women were given questionnaires to complete about the topic after which they were informed of the research being about personality and childhood experiences. After completion of the questionnaires, the results were subjected to statistical analysis so as to establish differences in the different variables being measured among the two populations. Statistical tools such as Fisher’s Z tests were employed to determine whether culture influences the relationship between narcissism and measures of attachment.

Finally, the results of the study showed that there existed correlations between measures of attachment, parental care, and narcissism. Significantly cultural differences were found to exist in various elements of narcissism with the UAE sample scoring high when it comes to parental care, attachment styles, and other facets. Parental care influence was seen in the negative effect of father care especially on the EE facet. Variations in the different elements of NPI between the two populations under study indicate that culture is a very important moderator of narcissism.
