Students need to realize that success in academics is based on hard work instead of the belief that people are born with the ability to grasp concepts in given study areas. Dr. Chew brings in the concept of meta-cognition in the understanding of better means of study. The concept is in relation to the ability to develop an understanding of a given subject and it can be achieved through the devotion of adequate time and concentration in what is being studied.

He further focuses on accuracy in the understanding of the learning process. The processing of information that defines the development and understanding of the learning process exists in a number of levels. The two levels of processing include the shallow level of processing which lays emphasis on the spelling of the words and the deep level processing which focuses on the meaning of words. Those who apply the use of deep processing are in a position to learn the materials that have been placed before them whether they wanted to gain an understanding of the material or never intended to do so. The proper understanding of the intention to learn and the various levels of processing is necessary for the process of gaining the necessary learning skills.
