Is there an important link between the friendships that we have and who we are as individuals? How might this account for the value of friendship? In this instance, Cocking and Kennett notes that for a lasting form of association, it admits both parties to accept direction and correction of one another. “As a close friend of another, one is characteristically and distinctively receptive to being directed and interpreted. Therefore, in these ways drawn by the other.” (Cocking & Kennett 503). It is, therefore, precisely evident from this fact that after the direction, the friends become close to each. Direction in this case acts as the link that holds the friendship between the individuals together. Once the two friends get drawn towards each other, the reception comes in where the feeling of love and appreciation develop in the long run. “Direction is a characteristics feature of friendships. Every individual has a tendency of the need to develop interests on particular issues that pleases him o r her.” (Cocking & Kennett 503-504). Direction from this perspective wins every individual’s heart in friendship by making such people develop a strong interest towards each other. From such strong interests, the linkage that also hold friendship thrives also at a faster rate which is good for the prosperity of the association in the future. Cocking and Kennett although recognize and appreciates the real bond forms, they also do not the concerns that may in the future lead to the disintegration of such particular forms of attachments. In their view, they note; “The reasons for action that arise from association do so from an altruistic concern for and commitment to the other's good. These reasons might well be of as moral rights. To this extent friendship might be as a morally valuable and virtuous relationship.” (Cocking & Kennett 282). From the context, Cocking, and Kennett notes that however how friends may show goodness to each other, they also have to show commitment and have the morals to enable their friendship to last longer. A real friendship, on the hand, according to Cocking and Kennett, must also show the element of care to one another since it does demonstrate how the friends value each other in friendship. With care being part of friendship too, based on Cocking and Kennett’s views, friends will be able express the ease of partiality to each. Such friendship will also be ready to listen to the welfare of the others when the situation calls for such cases. Section 2 4. Is the friendship of Holly and Harry in The Third Man a genuine friendship? In answering, you should draw on course readings associated with the nature of friendship. Be sure to give an account of what you think a genuine friendship consists in addition to arguing that Holly and Harry do or do not possess such a friendship. No. The friendship is not genuine one. True friendship involves tolerance and patience with each other. It also entails the love, care, and understanding of one another despite difference in neither ideas nor opinions. In the case of Holly and Harry, it is precisely evident that, they had no genuine friendship between them. Due the conflict that surfaces between them, Holly ends up murdering his friend Harry. Even in the layman’s language and understanding in the friendship area, will also not agree with Hurry as a genuine friend to Harry before killing him. Good friends should love each other as far as the situation prevails; Friendship entails patience with each other. There should be no cases of impartiality between the friends in question. Friendship should create or allow room for correction whenever an individual goes against the principles or the ideologies of the other; “… Cases of conflict can arise, and stop. It is this sort of conflict Holly struggles with the course of The Third Man.” (Cocking & Jeannete, 268). When such elements of admitting for wrong doing and thereafter accepting for correction, the friendship is, therefore, bound to last for a long time. It is because each and every individual in it will live or be in it as a way of appreciating and loving one another. Mutual respect will, therefore, enhanced by this context since such elements of trust, faith, and confidence in each other also comes in. These factors make the friendship to become more and more stable Section 3 5. Lawrence Blum argues that a genuine friendship is always a moral right. Cocking and Kennett disagree, claim that friendship can be (and often is) morally dangerous. Which view is correct? In answering, be sure to explain why each holds the view that they hold, and why you think that one view is right? Real friendship should entail morals in it. Friends must have the bests morals within them to enable them grow and mature in their friendship. Cocking and Kennett support this fact. They reiterate friend may end up because of immoral activities. “We are led morally astray by virtue of a relationship that makes its demands” (Cocking & Kennett, 240). Real friendship, therefore, should not be demanding, but should understand to accommodate all the situations that lie before it. It does not mean that a friend has to be there for his fellow friend. It is also not a must that he or she meets all the obligations even if he or she lacks at that particular time. “Much rely on for the sake of friendship itself, and of what they have reason to do it (Blum 179). If not controlled, such are the pressures that do make or make some friends to go against the morals that are not healthy for the prosperity of the friendship. However, some intrigues will always argue the other way round of being in friendship that lack morals. They present their claims that associations that recognize morals are unrealistic friendship while the other that does not understand morals as the real friendship. Cocktail proceeds to give his view on a class of friendship that he refers to the highly moralized account of friendship. He presents this type of friendship as that that can be highly dangerous to the concerned parties. It lies in the particular moral learning that comes out of a commitment in our lives. It is also dependent on the character that friends offer. Lastly, it also relies on the moral example presented by each other. “As their close friend, we shall want to emulate them. Cocking and Kennett in this case note that this friendship sometimes may fail in some particular situations. Such situations may be where the individuals who carries it or performs may become non-responsible to each other. Cases of attitudes of not having a heart to care about one another may also surface in the long run. Yes, it is true the way Cocking and Kennett reiterates from the context about some characters capable of swaying their fellows in being moral. However, such friends must also remain firm to avoid the conflicts of interest between them. Blum focuses more on the moral worth of friendship where he describes it as deep caring and identification with the sake of the other” (Cockin194) in friendship. Blum notes other benefits of morals in care. The care in this case involves a deep caring for and identification with the interests of another (Blum. 195). However how much the highly moralized friendship may seem headed to crumbling in its future, the parties in it do still stick together despite the challenges they face in it. According to Cocking and Kennett’s view, they add that trust is the sole component that keeps the highly moralized friendship. ; “It is a conceptual truth that we want those we love to flourish. It must include their moral flourishing. To the extent, then, that we accept from the outset a person's character flaws without trying to improve them. To the extent that in no any way concern with their virtue. They claim that the relationship falls short of true friendship.” (Cocking & Jeannette 180). From this context, Cocking and Kennett adds that human beings have different characters; therefore, it is the duty of friendship to take care of such people in the bond system. They also add that friendship is therefore to make people flourish in their moral. The highly immortalized also deserve the love of friendship so that they may change and be righteous people. From the discussion on morals in friendship, Cocking and Kennett’s arguments outweigh those of Blum’s making it to it to be the best between arguments on the effects of morals in friendship.
