According to (Milrod et al., 2014) 70% of separation anxiety cases are managed through cognitive behavioral therapy, which is an aspect of psychotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy performs by shaping the thinking process of a child thus the child is helped to overcome the unconscious events that trigger anxiety episodes. The use of psychotherapy in the management of separation anxiety is thus a permanent management procedure of the psychological problem.

Family therapy as another aspect of psychotherapy equally offers excellent results in the management of separation anxiety. Family therapy helps by teaching the family members concerning the disorder thus they will cooperate with the psychologist in the elimination of anxiety triggers. The family at the same time offers the best approach for support of the child during periods of anxiety. The counseling relationship is an essential ingredient of the therapeutic process, and the majority of psychologists agree that it has more influence on management outcomes than specific treatment methods.
